Today I went with my dad to help him pick up some pipe at a ranch a few miles away. This ranch, like my dad's, is in the middle of nowhere -- which, seeing as how it's October in California, means it's surrounded by dusty oak trees and brown, ugly grass, with a mostly-dry creek going past and a whole lot of cattle hanging around. But this particular place is an oasis of landscaped green -- it reminds me, if you've ever read Blue Willow (which you should, if you're female, kids' book and all), of the ranch in that book. It belongs to a family friend; when I was a little girl she used to make the world's best popcorn balls, and on the rare occasions when I see her now, she remembers me as "that spelling champion" (which I was... in 1987).

In the winter and spring when the creek is running high, this footbridge is the only access to the house.

Wonderful leading lines on this. Thanks for the book suggestion too! I looked up Blue Willow and I think that it would be a great choice for the mother/daughter book club in which my daughter and I take part. :)

I don't think I ever read that, which is funny because I've been an avid reader since I was very young - going to have to look it up! I like this shot - would like to see it in colour, but it works well as a black & white as well.

I like the patterns on the bridge of the boards & the shadows. Great story too, thanks for sharing!

Terrific story, Rachel. So glad to be sharing another side-challenge with you. Nice composition and interesting choice to go with the b&w.

Neat perspective with the diagonals created by the bridge, would like a bit more contrast between the darks and lights. But overall I live the atmosphere projected by the processing.

The black and white really works well for this picture. I would love to see the color version also with its oasis of green.

I love bridges. The fact that this is white and most everything else is a mid tone or shadow- the leading line is that much more effective.

Nice perspective and I like the story. Does she still give you popcorn balls?

I love how you have composed this. The lines of the bridge make such a great perspective. But most of all I love the story. It radiates nostalgia and memories.

I want some popcorn balls. I haven't thought of them in forever!

This might be quite nice in colour to see the contrast between the dry dustiness and the greenery

it looks a bit spooky the way you've processed it .. and it reminds me a lot of where i live .. the dryness you talk about and the UGLY brown grass and dusty trees ... we're just coming out'v winter and two months to go until summer ... we get those dusty trees and brown grass in summer mostly ... we have the dry creek beds too, and cattle and sheep .. altho yeseterday driving down our road, which is dirt, we looked over into the paddock running beside the road and there was a kangaroo, just sitting there looking at us ... we get a lot of them hanging around .. wild ... & they just jump thru the fences ...
loved your write up .. in fact you write a great yarn !! ... a champion speller and a great writing style seems to me to be a shoe in for a wonderful book .. (i've never written shoe in before, or even used it when talking, but i couldnt think of any other term .. hmmmm well winner would'v been easier !! ) ...:):)
