This is my 11 year old daughter Joyah. Today sure was an exercise in frustration! It was exercise in learning how little I know and how crap I am at photography but I will keep trying :)
It is Monday of the 2nd week of the school holidays. Both my girls are dancers and have ballet exams coming up. It is traditional in the these holidays to have grade school which is when they go to ballet everyday!
I had originally planned to take 2 nice photos of both the girls with their hair done for ballet and put them together into 1 photo. I posted on the thread a question how to do it but no one replied thats alright because as it ended up I dont think the photos would have gone well together.
The weather is absolutley foul today very grey and raining heavily for most of the day.
I dont really know how to use my camera properly especailly in low light!
I made the poor girls go outside between heavy showers!
I quite like this pose but I find it really hard to get them to look natural grrr.
This is the best I could do considering I still havent earnt my drivers licence for my camera ( but hey thats what challenges like this are for!) and the conditions.
No processing ( would'nt know where to begin on these ones!) straight out of the camera just resizing
I like this background better than the other one, but it feels like you are almost looking up at her, and for some reason that feels a bit unnatural to me. Again, though, beautful girl, beautiful exposure. Very nicely done.
I think you are too hard on yourself! Your daughters are lovely and you managed to illuminate their faces without washing them out with too much light.
How wonderful that you have such natural beauties to work with as models. You will be amazed at how dramatically different your images will become with just a bit of simple editing to enhance them. Keep at it!
Again, I like this as well. I think cropping a little more off the left and not cropping so much off the right might help the composition of this picture. I guess kind of the same crop as the other picture would also be good for this one. I commend you for getting your daughters to cooperate in such foul weather, what great models they are.
dont be down on yourself .. i reckon we've got the best in the world in dpc .. comparisons make no sense at all except of course to help us improve .. i really like this portrait coz its very real .. i agree about the composition, but you must be sick of hearing it now .. your daughter makes a beautiful, fresh and lovely subject ... i'll be hoping to see more photographs of her, altho if she's anything like my daughter she's totally sick of having me in her face with a camera .. she says its like i have it growing out'v my face .. !! ... :)
Beautiful portrait with great lighting. As the others have stated, I would chop off some of the surrounding background - preferably the whole left side. The skin tones are perfect and your daughter is adorable. For the 'natural' posing - if they are little performers, that will be hard to accomplish - ha!
I love landscape orientation but like muckpond said, I think it's too centered. Nice DOF and focus. A square crop might be fun. I'm a huge fan of that.
Lovely portrait! Nicely done, only suggestions for improvement are to echo comments of muckpond and KarenNfld regarding centered composition and focus.
hey, i think this is a really good start. i think the composition is too centered and would be more dramatic with her further left. you can also do some post-processing on the eyes and teeth to make them brighter.
a good way to get a natural pose is to not have her look 90 degrees to one side. have her turn her body about a 1/4 turn away from you and then look at the camera. then her neck won't be so twisty (which, to me, is the most unnatural looking part). :)
