i took a black piece of construction paper and sketched out a replica of mapplethorpe's 'calla lily'. then cut it out and taped white tissue paper behind the empty flower space. then back lit it, converted to greyscale and jiggled the levels just a tad.

Don't know what a mapplethorpe is. I don't like the way this pattern looks. probly cause I don't know what it is. 5

This was a daring idea. You are very brave for crafting an image of this type. And while I 'get' it, I have to say that this doesn't move me quite the way I might have wished to be moved. Also, the edges look a little jaggy. And stuff.

The simplicity is nice. No one can argue that you have muted greytones, either. :-) karmat

I like the concept on this photo and I am familiar enough with Mapplethorpe to understand where you are going with this photo. I scored this a 6. This particular image falls into a category of photography that I don't care much for. When I look at this, I ask myself, 'Is this a photograph'? This falls into my category of Digital Art rather than digital photography, even though both are digital art. This image, to me, doesn't resemble a photograph. The negative space here is definitely well defined and present in the image. The photo also has merit as artwork. :) - jmsetzler

This is much better than Mr. Mapplethorpe could do.

This feels like negative and negative - without a positive. I have seen this idea in art books etc. This one just doesn't appeal to me. Apologies.

it would've been great to not tell what it was and let everyone see what they wanted to see... nice shot and idea.

It's kind of nice with such dramatic contrast, but I don't know what it is. I'd say it meets the challenge though. Good luck in the challenge! Grayce aka Gracious

I like it, but oddly enough, find that I would prefer to see "something" of the flower, not just a white space. This gives me the feeling of a drawing (which is a good thing for me!). lhall-8

That really is negative space :). It's an interesting homage to one of Mapplethorpe's Calla Lilly photos. I know the exact one. It helps me to appreciate it in a new way... however, this photo on its own might not stand alone very well if I didn't know the reference you're making.

I am so utterly confused by this that it must be good ;o) The good, the bad, the white, the black....give me a while to take it all in and I'll get back to ya. ~indigo997

I think you took "negative space" to literal... More "drawing"challenge than dpchallenge...
