I especially liked the telephone poles on the left and how they repeated the form of your main subject. In fact, I even would have liked to see more of them. Now, after your explanation, I also understand your intent of the negative space and I must say: well thought. Unconsciously both things (plants in the foreground and the telephone poles) did exactly what you described. I agree with the others who think the lighting is a bit dark. It looks like a bright sunny day but somehow there is not enough contrast.

This cross is 190 feet tall (19 stories) It is located in a field about 40 miles East of Amarillo, TX.
The Cross is the main subject of the picture of course and to me everything in the picture defines the Cross:
1.The telephone poles give scale to it’s size
2.The grass and weeds show that it is located in just a plain old field out in the middle of nowhere.
3.Clouds, I would have been just as pleased if the clouds had not been there that day but sense they were I decided to name the picture “Stairway to Heaven” because generally Heaven is thought to be in the clouds.

The “Wow” for me was the size of the cross and how everything around it depicted its size.

this shot is too busy, with the weeds in the foreground, telephone poles and such

Beautiful clouded day for this photo. I think it works well for this challenge because even though the sky is rather cloudy (which some may not consider negative space) the fact that our brain recognizes sky as being generally an expansive, empty space keeps our attention focused on the cross and foreground only glancing up to see the shapes in the clouds. The few telephone poles and weeds (twigs?) in the front are only very minor distractions once you start looking all around the photo and the weeds actually provide a useful element by breaking into the space of the sky, I think. Nice shot.

Interesting pic. A smidge dark for my tastes. Not sure that it says Negative Space to me though.

That's weird that they'd put a cross in the middle of the field like that. Great shot. 6

My eye picked up on the cross-like utility poles in the distance, on the left. I thought that was interesting, whether it was intentional or not.

Meets the challenge and is quite interesting. A tad brighter would improve this. Good composition.

Is this Northern Texas? If so where? I drove by a cross just like this a took a picture of it a couple years ago.

I like your use of the repeating vertical elements against an essentially two-toned background.

Interesting composition...Especially the telephone poles to the left...

very nicely done, great title.

Excellent cloudcapture. The negative space really makes this one. 9

nice shot but I don't see the negative space

I like the softness of this shot as well as the cross imagery in both the fore and background. good job. cmcvety.

Good exposure, decent color and sharp focus. I particularly like how the subject is repeated in the power lines at the left. Yes, this is where the ascent to heaven begins.
09/16/2002 06:48:00 PM
did u try just the cross and sky?
09/16/2002 05:11:00 PM
you're probably getting a lot of comments about this, but the telephone polls on the side take some of the power away from the overall mood and scene. other than that the photo is very nice.

Negative space is lacking here. Too much going on in the sky/foreground
09/16/2002 03:42:00 PM
I have to wonder if this is a good angle on a small object, or if this is actually one really huge cross. I think you have used "negative space" properly, and it is appropriate with the subject. The lighting, angle and focus are great, and so is the framing. I like how it's not dead center of the photo. Great job. Good luck in the challenge. ~Hbunch7187~

Moving, stark, superbly composed… (10)

Nice work and idea. For me, this would've been more effective by cropping most of the grass out, leaving a very small line across the bottom..was there a reason to leave it in. To me it is taking away the effect from the cross against the sky.
Great work (more comments later) 7

I like this very much. The telephone pole on the left are distracting to my eye, but I can live with it. Nice perspective, nice work. Score 7 Justine

i like your cross and the whole picture but I am not sure if it is negative space--help--7bobgaither

I'd have got rid of the brown plants in the foreground first, just snap them off.

The telephone poles on the left initially made me cringe, but on second thought, they are sort of consistent with the subject. Those weeds in the foreground though gotta go....
