I am able to achieve extremely narrow DOF with my macro lens. I was able to limit the field of focus in this shot to just the pencil point. Shot with a Canon 10D with 100mm f2.8 Macro lens, one Alien Bee 800 with Brolley box and a Sigma Super DG 500 flash with Stofen Omni Diffuser. I used a piece of scrap red matboard for a background.

I'm surprised this wasn't more popular with other voters, since I like it so much... I think it's stunning.

Excellent focal point with a very shallow depth of field

Really like the background color you chose. It really adds to what could be a not so interesting subject. But it really makes the picture pop. Very nice DOF as well.

great colors and good focus on the point.

I do like the colours, especially how the orange of the pencil blends with the red background. I do think that a bit wider DOF, showing more of the pencil tip in focus would have worked better though.

I like the way the red and yellow blend

This is a good example of 'extreme' shallow depth of field. I think it is extreme to the point (no pun intended) where the subject loses out to 'technique'. This is a good demonstration of the technique, but the photo itself doesn't seem to have much impact other than that.

I really like this a lot - I love extremely shallow DOF. In this case I love your choice of background colour - the pencil really fades into it i such a fascinating way. One of my favourite 3 or 4 of this challenge.
