Challenge: Painting with Light (Advanced Editing I)
Camera: Olympus C-5050Z
Location: T-Tabernacle's apartment
Date: Jan 25, 2004
Aperture: F8.0
ISO: 4.0 sec
Shutter: 64
Galleries: Portraiture, Black and White
Date Uploaded: Jan 25, 2004

Since the weather has been forcing most of us indoors, I was presented with an even bigger challenge in creating a shot that stood out from a pitch black environment. Thank God this was an advance editing rules challenge & I was able to clone out the parts that stood out from bouncing light from the moving flash I used.
In the digital darkroom, I ditched the colour, adjusted the brightness a tad to have the reflected light stand out a wee bit more, sharpened & despeckled, cropped & added a simple border.

Interesting back-light idea. Still a bit dark and no indication that light source was moving as challenge states.

I dont know how to vote on this subject but I think this is a great idea and different to others in this challenge
maybe a little too dark but clever idea

i like this photo a lot. but i wonder how would it look like with the background darkened to absolute black, forcing the focus only on the subject and nothing else...even may be diffuse glow for the light shining at the edges giving it some misterious qualitites... it already is a good photo thou...

Lovely subtle image. You done just enough with the light to get the job done without overdoing it.

I like the back light, but the background items do not help. A bit of darkening of the back ground to eliminate the objects would have given you a higher score.

Exceptionally good photographic version of white chalk drawing. I would hang this one on my wall.
However I will copy in some comments that I have put in with some other entries.

My only concern is, as you may have guessed from the amount of discussion on the forum re "painting with light" is whether it is painting with light.
Having been lucky enough to judge what is now a few hundred competitions in the last 30 years I feel I should say the first thing that happens is that they are sorted and any that do not immediatly seem to fit the category are dumped (hard but a fact). This is why so many competitions also run an "open category". Your picture, as impressive as it is, would, I feel have been rejected at this stage. "Painting with Light" has a fairly tight definition in photography but still allows a lot of lattitude for creativity.
I suspect that your scores may not reflect what the picture is worth which is a great shame. I believe if I was judging in another category I would have gone for a higher score and quite possibly a 10
I do hope you understand my reasons for marking it down
David

I like this shot for its simplicity and mystery. I would have liked to see the background completely black with just the outline of your subject visible. Good job.
