Thanks for (almost) all the comments!! I did mess up here - the upper right-hand corner, there's a wrinkle in the wax paper I used for a backdrop. I didn't see it until I had everything broken down and I was chosing the photo to edit - with only an hour left to go. The wrinkle got progressively worse to the right and up, so I cropped really tight!

Also, when taking the photo, I didn't notice how distracting the woodgrain was. That was the reason I darkened the red channel - it actually de-emphasized it best. But not good enough - next time - plain cloth for the floor!

Playing with the florescent hand-light, I liked this angle best, even though it didn't emphasize the eyes. The eyes on this particular "sculpture" are really plain, anyhow - not much there more than you can see in this pic. The rippling muscles are the thing for this Leo. And I really liked the shadow of the tooth on the back of his mouth.

Again, sincere thanks for your comments!!

I like your back lighting effect here but find composition a bit too tight in frame.

I find the lighting on this photo espcially interesting, and the composition is pleasing. I think the tight crop works very well.

Unacceptable in the eye region - portraits and animals if we can see their eyes, make them in focus and well enough lit to see.

Too many shadows especially on the face. Maybe a different POV would have helped. Or a closeup of just part of the lion.

Nice, though lighting is off. Light in back is too strong (maybe a little less in back and little more in front.

Nicely done

Awesome lighting! Maybe could have used one more very soft light to illuminate the right side of the face a little more. But the body, legs, feet, and background are amazing! 9

Just because I'm a leo you are getting a bit higher score.
Plus a very nice pic and leo, might have used a soft light on the front too, a bit from above :D

Great shot. I like the lighting, you went with the lit from behind idea but kept a lot of the detail in the photo, didn't just settle for a siluet. To improve this I think a white, smooth background would have been better. That would make all of the shadows in the lion stand out. The wood table, and the grainy background don't help things in my opinion.

Extra points on this for the backlight. Would have liked just a hair more light on top around the mane and the left side of the face.

Nice lighting. I like the tight crop, but maybe a bit too tight on the tail

The backlightning gives good effect but I would have tried some other angel of sidelightning to get rid of the shadowes of the head. The shadowes of the body gives good expression of the texture of it.

Very nice shot. I like the lighting and the shadows very much. I think it might have been better to have the table covered with something plain, the wood grain is a little distracting.

Good shot. I like the back lighting. I would like to see a little more light on the front of the lion though.

GOOD - nice composition and lighting, also a fitting title - seems like the leo emerges from the sun

BAD - the head should be more in focus
