I really like this "slice of life" capture. And I think that the tone on tone part of it really lends itself to the mystery part too.

This for me is primarily a candid, and the blur (as has been said) works in that respect to add to that feeling; it is a shot, though, that I think would not be substantially different had the focus been sharp.

Exactly! :)
The only difference in my mind is that as I peer down from the bus window, my mind wonders what he is reading that has so piqued his interest. Fiction, non-fiction, is it something that has will hold my mind for longer than 5 minutes... etc.

Yes, I honestly have these conversations in my head about stuff like that. :D

a casual candid, modified w/beautiful handmade soft colour tone, neither detail nor important environ elements are neglected in this superb & tight composition.

I love the fleeting-moment feel of this..

Like a record sleeve photo, very sweet, almost other worldly, and very melancholy indeed, like a treasured memento.

I like the outdated feel of it too. Like this was found in the bottom of a drawer. Blur rocks.

If you think the sweater is dorky, how about the hat? I have him pegged as Austrian :-) The image doesn't do a lot for me, however... It has a certain charm, but I wouldn't come back to look at it over and over again...

This is a nice candid, I always wonder how people can read a book just standing around, the bit of blur indicates the shot was taken in haste and adds to the candidness.

Like the composition. Light in upper left and lower right frame the subject nicely. The slight blur works in that it adds mystery. Nice.
