Well in shock news today I have to announce that I am going to fail this challenge because this is going to be my last entry

I am off on holiday on the 8th August and given that I will be going to a remote yurt in Canada I am not going to be able to post (but I have high hopes for my August Free Study Image) so the end of the month seems like a sensible place to call it a day

For my last picture I have incorporated three great things that I have learnt over the last 31 days ( Roz I wish i could have made this a Diptych but I still have too much to learn about this.

Desat is provided thanks to jackal9
The uber cool translucent border comes courtesy of suiteness
And the fact that this is cropped in a perfect 5 by 5 square is down to aspect ratio and the fantastic cfarrell who in explaining how to do this saved an awful lot of frustration and bad language in my house.

I guess sometimes in PP 'less is more' but today I just wanted you to know that I have taken on board what you said

I also wanted to say a huge thank you to the DPCer who wishes to remain anonymous for the gift of Photoshop Elements 5. My PP is still at a basic level but I actually 'get' PE5 and I do feel that through using it my PP has improved. All I can say is that every time I process an image I think very kindly of you

Many thanks to everyone who commented on one of my pics in this challenge. You were, I fear, often too kind with your words (my other challenge scores seem to suggest this is the case), but your time and effort have always been gratefully received

I also wanted to say thank you for everyone who has been submitting images to this challenge. Not only have the shots been an inspiration but the stories behind them have often left me speechless and it has been a priviledge to share moments of what you may think are ordinary lives but which have quite frequently been extraordinary to me.

Whilst talking of the stories behind the pictures I should probably say that I have treated this challenge very much like a personal journal for a month. I have surprised myself with how much I have told you all and have found the experience quite cathartic (although possibly catatonic inducing for the reader)

I also wanted to thank everyone for their indulgence when they commented on the pictures that Daisy, Polly and Cassie took which occasionally found their way on site. These few words have been really inspiring to the kids and whilst I may try to come across as a gruff father/uncle a real bonus has been to see the talent that they have and the way people on the site have encouraged them

I guess the last thank you should be to rebecca for coming up with the idea for the challenge and organising it. It has been huge fun (and hard work) participating

Thats it from me then (I fail the challenge) although I will continue to comment until I actually leave on holiday

In the immortal words of Vinnie Jones in Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels

'Its been emotional'

Thank you

ah, jon, I've been out of the commenting loop, but I'd wondered where your pictures had gone. What a bummer, that there will be NO MORE (sniff)! Enjoy your vacation, though, and thanks for all your wonderful comments and for this nice post. :)

Jon, I can't believe I won't see your pictures every day anymore! I was so sad reading that you'll be away (even though the challenge is only another 17 something days & it will all end) :( I have loved getting a little inside view into your life, it's been so much fun to hear about your days with Daisy & read all the differences between where we live (and the similarities). I hope you have a wonderful vacation & thank you so much for all your wonderful comments & all of your stories & pictures!!

Oh don't go! I've loved seeing everyones pictures & I hope like cgino said that you will post a few of your vacation shots here. I agree that this challenge has definitely been educational, and an awesome way to keep a journal. I look forward to seeing more of your shots in the future & hope you have an excellent vacation!!!

Btw, I think this is a pretty cool shot, I like the editing you've done.

I've loved seeing your corner of the world through your eyes, and will miss seeing another 19 shot! But I completely understand your choice; it is hard enough to take, process and post shots daily and keep up with commenting on others' shots as well, without being on vacation! It sure would be great if you could post some of your vacation shots in your leisure time once you return, say maybe at least 19 of them??? :-)

Have a great time, and thanks to you for your funny, thoughtful, constructive comments to the rest of us :-)

Failed? Hardly! I've gotten so much from your participation.

I echo the sentiments of the others who have already commented below (above?). Have a good week and an even better holiday. And if the unquenchable impulse strikes before you leave, feel free to pop in with "one last photo."

Cheers from NYC,
-- Larry

You're leaving us!?! To go on VACATION?? lol! I do hope you have a great time. Really. Where in Canada? And I didn't realize they had yurts there. Are there also yaks? Where there are yurts, there are yaks. At least in my imagination.

It's been wonderful playing with you, Jon. Your comments are thoughtful, hilarious, and observant. Your photos have given us so much insight in your life and your surroundings, and are always fun to view. I hope to see a TON of photos when you return from the yurt. Who knows - we might still be doing this challenge. I for one am hooked.

Have fun - bon voyage!

Alicia

Oh, and your photo is awesome!

Jon, I enjoyed your photos and stories immensely as well as all of your comments. Have a wonderful time on your holiday. A Canadian yurt sounds very cool and a great place to be communing with nature and taking wonderful photos.

lol this reminds me of your YAPPIE acceptance speech.

well it looks like you learned a lot from this challenge as you incorporated everything but a triptych into this. nice desat (pretty reds orange! red orange is a nice color...) and the inner border looks good.

it's too bad you are done submitting as I enjoyed reading your very detailed stories.

I don't really know what a yurt is but I hope you have a very wonderful vacation!

WOW! Jon, It saddens me to see you leave us, but of course I completely understand and wish you the best in your upcoming holidays (a remote yurt!! how cool is that!) I have spent time in Canada as a teenager around the Winnipeg MB area and Lake of the Woods, beautiful country. Hope you have a blast!!

"it's been emotional" I LOVED LOVED LOVED that movie! absolutely one of the best if not the best movie EVER! You did not fail this challenge my friend, you made it, even though you may not finish all 50 days the days you participated in have more than made up for any lack of posting in the future. I know I for one have always looked forward to your shots and comments. You have helped to make this side challenge fun and exciting for the rest of us and thats what it's all about! I thank you and hope to join you in the next side challenge you take part in.

It's been real!

Wow.... this is a very sad good bye letter, Jon. It's almost like you won't be back. (say it isn't so....) I hope you have a wonderful holiday. I don't know what a "yurk" is, but I'm guessing it's in the wilderness. Your images have been a wonderful joy to look at and your musings are humorous and quite enjoyable. Thanks for including me in your journeys.... :)

You'll be missed.
