we are extending our house and this morning at 7am the concreting ppl came .. we were moving things from where they are going to be pulling up the existing concrete near the back door and we had some bricks in a cardboard box .. this frog was inside the box .. so i took photographs of him and then moved him to a safer place at the front of the house ..
it wasnt fully light which is why i had f2.8 .. i dont particularly like moving off iso100 all that much coz i totally got over grain with my tamron ... therefore this has a very shallow depth of field ..
he doesnt look so good in the square crop either !!

i considered putting this in the 'still life' challenge as a sort'v joke coz the frog was amazingly still especially considering i broke off parts of the box he was on so i could get a better orientation ... of course if i want a score of 4 that would be the way to go .. but i dont !!!

I honestly thought he was dead at first. :) He looks so forlorn! I think the shallow DOF works well here, zeros the viewer in right on that one remarkable eye.

I love the blue tones here. He looks so lost and tired (and slimy! lol). I personally like the DOF because it adds great emphasis to his face. What I really LOVE tho is the border. Did you add some kind of radial blur to the canvas? Do tell - it is awesome!

Hey Roz, stunning clarity on this shot and I love the really shallow DOF

The eye and toes are just amazing

Also I have to say that the multi coloured border borks fantastically well bleeding as it does into the background

Wonderful

I love the shallow DOF from the 2.8 Blue color gives this guy a different look that works well.

I didn't know frogs were available in blue, unless you went to the Amazon or somewhere exotic. :-)
Nice shot. What a cool little guy -- so alien. Isn't it funny how that one hair on the ground stands out with the close-up and shallow DOF?

Here's another one from me... No sooner had I commented on this photo, I opened up Rob Brezsny's scopes and found this for your Pisces rising*:

If you're a gardener who loves your plants, you're merciless towards weeds. Even if you have a deep reverence for all forms of life, you don't waver in your drive to yank out the hairy bittercress that's crowding your tomatoes. You don't feel twinges of guilt as you eliminate the chickweed near your squash. I advise you to use a similar approach as you nurture your little growing things in the coming days. Safeguard them from anything that would distract them from their instinctive purpose or weaken their power to become more thoroughly themselves. (This refers to the frog... not the swan. I'm the swan. The frog is your little growing things in life you have to nurture - I'm cracking myself up - perhaps I should go to bed)

* Always good to read the rising and the moon, too.

Pretty eyes and beautiful color. The little dude looks really afraid. I'm glad you put him in a better place. Great photo, Roz. And no - I'm sure that wouldn't have gone over well for still life - not unlike my submission ARGH! But back to your photo... I like the shallow DOF - makes it look like a dream frog.

I love the focus on his face, he almost has an expression like he thinks he's the coolest little guy around:) I love the blue color & the multi-colored border. Thanks for all your comments yesterday!

i like it! the color, the texture, the shallow DOF... all work harmoniously together. the square works for me here (maybe i am just a square!) only problem i have with it is the hair/thread by his mouth... clone that out and your totally rockin'!

This is very nice Roz! I like the narrow DoF very much and the lighting is great!

You keep bricks in a cardboard box??? : )

I love the DOF on this little guy. His eye is crystal clear and very sharp, then he fades off. Wonderful job.
