I had to dash out to the store this evening (after a nice quiet day at home), and when I did, I saw that the 'bird gang' was out in full force. There's this one area at the bottom of our street where these blackbirds congregate in really large groups on the TV cable lines. They sit there making a lot of noise, harrassing each other and passers-by and especially other birds (woodpeckers must be Crips to their Bloods or something, I swear), until it gets fully dark and then they go home.

(The things that go through my head sometimes. You have no idea.)

Anyway. There were more birds there tonight than I ever remember seeing before, and I stopped to take a few pictures, since I was in no hurry (and since I hadn't shot anything for this project yet). This square crop is a tiny sampling -- they were packed along the wire like this for sixty yards or so.

Really nice. I never see more than two or three birds around at a time, so to get a shot like this is really amazing. The negative space makes the shot.

The negative space in this photo is amazing! Very great capture, I love it! I have strange thoughts in my head too, it does make you wonder is animals have gangs, haha.

You chose a great group for your crop with the few in the middle and the one in the left perched differently, it breaks it up nicely! You gotta wonder what birds like this are thinking...
I like seeing the gradient of blue in the sky, the comp works great! I wouldn't mind seeing the noise reduced in the sky a bit :-)

Outstanding photo! As I'm sure others would have said, this is great use of negative space. Wonderful sky - and I loved your commentary.

I'm laughing at all the 'great gradient' comments, because I didn't do that. It was really there. Can't take credit. :) Thahks, though.

That made me laugh!

Really nice composition, even though you had to lose some of the birds. I love the silhouettes.

The square crop works well here and I love the composition, and the blue gradient in the sky offsets the birds on the wire.

Totally cool capture. I love the negative space and how regularly the birds are spaced on the wire, also their different positions. Suggestion -- you might bring the birds up a tad in the picture. IMNSHO, this would help the square crop.

Love the comparison with the Crips and the Bloods.

mad shot .. love it .. excellent expanse of clear blue sky and then those birds on the wire .. great the way you've composed this and the square crop is working real well .. i drive by a place quite often that has birds sitting on a wire a lot of the time, and each time i drive by and they are there i think of stopping, coz i reckon it would make the best shot .. well you've just proved that it would be the best shot, altho the birds that are on the wire i see are usually minor birds and they arent that large or attractive ... so they might just look like dark smudges on a wire rather than your excellent sharp and focused birds .. love the way they're all looking in different directions and in different postures .. :)

Yo-Yo, the blackbirds are in the 'hood...Although if they were really that tough then they would surely come out in the dark rather than go home!

I have to say I am a massive fan of negative space shots and this is a classic, especially since you have got so many blackbirds on the line which contrasts wonderfully

Very cool and slightly eerie
