OK, I was looking through my portfolio for the first two weeks of the challenge and I though...Oh my word...everyone is going to think that the English are effete new-man daughter loving, bug holders...so as I was sipping my camomile tea in my silk dressing gown (joke) I decided to redress the balance.

An opportunity arose as I was cleaning out my garage (oh no!! Now I have confessed that I do cleaning as well) I found my old rugby gum shield and so I thought I would give you a sight of what I used to look like every weekend to quaking little backs (I played second row forward, where the basic job criteria is 'Is big...likes pushing and is stupid enough to enjoy running into things hard'

The shirt is the one from Clapham RUFC a team where I was lucky enough to get into the first XV and which had a great spirit both on and off the pitch

I retired a few years ago after I broke my knee and then shortly after coming back dislocated my shoulder (which I think is called separating in the US) very badly (in fact it was almost closer to my other shoulder joint than it was to where it started from.

I guess one of my regrets in life is that Daisy never got to see 'good old dad' charging around like a lunatic after an oval shaped ball and sometimes think I should find a vets team to play in...Fortunately so far sanity has prevailed and I remain out of the game.

The one thing that is missing from the shot is the black masking tape that we used to stick our ears against the side of our heads with (tragically I almost nipped into town to get some, but managed to fight the urge)

You wont find me taking many self portraits so never fear, but understand this....I'm tough!!!! Grrrrrr

Haha, this is great (and a little intimidating :) Physical sports & me do not match, but I'm sure you knocked down many guys in your day. If the goal was to look tough, well, goal accomplished!

Oooo, grrrr, I'm convinced, you ARE tough!! (regardless of the preceding string of touchy-feely shots) I really would like to have seen the taped back ears, however :-)

I had no idea you guys taped your ears to your head. But it makes sense really. A dislocated shoulder and broken knee are one thing. But a hurt ear...that just won't do!

awesome self-portrait. Great story. I believe you -- no silk dressing gowns in your house. :) I agree with Leisha -- although forget the autographed picture; just pull out the gum guard and the uniform again and answer the door wearing this face when the boys come calling.

Oh my! And I thought you were just a nice daughter-loving bug holder! I will remember to never piss you off. Haha. Great colors. You should hand this out with autographs to any of Daisy's boyfriends that you want to scare off. ;)

Baahaa!! Love your story, Jon. And how you burst my bubble. Here you had me thinking you were a non-threatening softie, but in fact, you are a manly badass! I'll have to watch my tone from now on. :op

Great blog entry (and self-portrait). With age comes wisdom, or so they say. I'm still waiting....

You say "daughter loving" like it's a bad thing. Just kidding, that was a very funny write-up to your reasons behind the self portrait. And yes, you look really tough here. Sir.

Great story...a guess what it comes down to is...some guys are shooting guns while other guys are shooting flowers. Hmmm...camomile...sounds good.

The story makes it! I love it, esp as a former American football player (I know, a confusing, weenie sport). Great self portrait.

HA! This is great. I now have a different perspective of you. (heh) This needs to be your profile pic. I love it - your machismo pic. It shows a lot of character. I am so certain now that no one is going to call you a girly man.

One thing I must say tho - I do not think this pic needed that subtle boxline. It's actually a distraction in this case.

As for Daisy, why not print this up as a poster, autograph it, and hang it in her bedroom. Then she can use it to impress her girlfriends when they come for a visit. ;)

Jon - Love it - very 'in your face' kind of self portrait.
