A big thankyou to all who took the time to comment. All but one saw the phone in the foreground as a distraction and I appreciate the time taken. I will pay more attention to foregrounds in portraits in the future. Thanks again.

Nice image. Subject is well lit, but maybe a bit harshly on the book itself. Unfortunately the cordless phone and other items in the foreground take away from the quaint feel of the pic and are a distraction. Otherwise very nice.

lighting is a bit harsh, as the tops of the arm, phone, & book pages are blown out. It's a nice candid, but nothing really jumps out at me to make me want to rate it high.

A nice shot. It would be better if the highlights were not blown.

The idea here is generally good. Get rid of the crap on the table in the foreground and tone the light down a bunch and you'd be in the ballpark.

nice lighting and a decent portrait but the phone really hurts the composition. If the phone wasn't there it would be a stronger shot.

Nice compostion and a nice change from all the city shots
Great idea

The items on the table in the foreground ruin this shot. Otherwise, it would be OK

Nice subject, great depiction of the theme...it just seems to be a little to bright. Softer lighting may have helped.

Get rid of the extraneous foreground elements and this would be more poigniant. Also glare on arm and book page are distracting and take attention away from the subject...

Slightly blown out on the page, but a cracker for me 9

An interesting take on the challenge, and the lighting is good. I like the nice, tight crop and the black background to give a sense of a night shot.

I like this shot, wasn't what I was expecting from this challenge but it meets the challenge well. He looks comfortable reading here, the book though seems a little overexposed. I like how the telephone has been added, shows me that he's thought of everything so that he doesn't have to get up iof it goes... A very good shot! 9

nice photo, the phone in the fore ground is distracting though

Good shot. The light is a little too harsh from the left hand side, showing on the top of the phone and the lower part of the book.

The phone and the other paraphanalia in the forground are distracting and the lower portion of the book is overexposed. Fix those 2 things and you have a really nice portrait.

Good contrast, the light is a little harsh on the book and a little on the arm. Maybe you should have left the stuff off the table. It is a little distracting. I like the overall feeling I get when I look at the picture though. Good job.

Like the play of light and shadows and pose of this one. Also fits very well to the challenge.
It's just too bright and also could have been improved considerablly by moving the phone and other items away and place a cup of tea or glass of wine/whisky there.

The phone is too prominent in the shot and the light is a little harsh. Other wise good after dark shot.

Nice, but I wish foreground phone was eliminated.

I had to come back to this photo several times to look at it. It is just a superb character study. I keep thinking how much I'd like a picture this 'real' of the people I love. Well done!

...until the phone rings! The phone is in such a strong position compositionally, my eyes ultimately end up switching from the man's face to the phone and back again, so I find it an ironic device considering your title. LIghting is nice, though burnt out in places--on the book, for instance, but this is a nice shot with some very interesting dynamics taking place.

This picture is really cool. The lighting is interesting but the foreground objects distract greatly. (Telephone and table) You should have moved them out of there.

Nice composition and moncromatic feel. Like the very black background. VERY minor criticism - phone in the foreground draws my eye to a not-so-interesting element.
