The distance from the subjects really removes almost all of the candid aspect from this photo, in my opinion. If you had cropped in closer around the two men in the trench you probably could have gotten a better result.

A tighter crop to focus better on the 3 people would help to make them more prominent.

Interesting shot, but not being able to see the people well detracts from being truly effective.

The whole photo seems slightly out of focus to me... Maybe it is my eyes thoug and I should just go to bed :p

Meets the challenge for sure. However since I don't live in the house with the big hole in the backyard and am not in construction, I don't think it's very interesting... Your focus does seem a little soft...
