 a martini glass full of water
dropped food coloring from a couple inches above.

lit with ambient cloudy skies, and two 60w halogen flood lamps.

i took a picture of the matte board backing and used that as a custom white balance.
+1 - +1.5 over exposed
that still left the BG a bit grey in places - so i used selective color, and removed the black from the whites. and repeated that.
sharpened

and thats it...

Very good idea and appealing result. Crop could be improved by taking a bit more of the top, so the top left and top right colors are gone. There is also the grey/blue refelction in the glass which does not really add to the picture. That would require a reshoot or some cloning.

This is an excellent image! I love the way the coloring just does its own thing in the water and how its behavior is so unpredictable. One thing I would have changed is the bowl/vessel. Either show more of it or none at all. I know it's difficult since it's glass and that's a pain to photograph on its own. In the picture's current state, it makes me look at parts of the image like the lower left and wonder how the blue dye is just floating there. Overall, great shot!
