This is a pile of old shell buttons - I rotated it for a better abstract effect. I'm not thrilled with the composition, but unfortunately it's all I have for today.

Channel mixer, a touch of extra contrast and some curves to adjust the midtones and highlights a bit, and USM.

I think the composition is fantastic, as is the detail and lighting! I have a collection of these old buttons too :-)

I have stacks of buttons and know how easy one thinks they might be to compose and create with. But not so, in my experience. At such close quarters every microscopic dust particle comes out, I found. I learn the art of composition from your photo.

I have commented here before, but it is such a wonderful image that I am compelled to repeat myself. I love the angle here and think the exposure is dead-on.

ahha .. i looked at this photograph and thought it somehow had a familiar appearance, so i looked at the lens you used and its the Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 USM Macro ... i have a Tamron AF 18-200mm f/3.5-6.3 XR Di II for Canon which is great in its way but not a good quality glass or anything .. and i got the canon 100mm after a long deliberation and trying out owen's ... i had to put my tamron in to be fixed as soon as i got the canon because it was sticking on the focus and zoom etc and so i went from 18-200mm to a fixed 100mm lens, and because the tamron was away for over two months then i only had the 100mm fixed for all that time .. it was another excellent learning experience but i really appreciated the tamron when i got it back .. i do love the wide angle ... since i've been in dpc i've learnt more than i could have possibly learnt in any other way .. its a fantastic site ...
i notice that you've got heaps of lenses .. i wouldnt mind your 400mm, ... altho f1.8 seems very appealing as well, for soft focus etc ..
i reckon a lens like my tamron 18-200mm, but good quality, and down to f2.8 would be the perfect lens for me ... they're very expensive tho .. decisions decisions .. lol ... :)
you have some awesome work in your portfolio .. a pleasure to see .. :)

The neat thing about this is how well you've exposed it to keep all the detail in the different tones of buttons. Very crisp and sharp, too - shows off the details well.

Interesting idea, and nicely done. The compostion seems to lack from a main subject though, so I tend to wonder around trying to find what I'm looking for.

I think it's a nice composition :) It's very bold and 3-d looking. I always like close cropped photos.
