I have a song I REALLY love that keeps playing through my head while I work on this image - the song (lyrics below) was written by an amazing writer called David Bridie, and performed by my all time favourite Australian Bands called My Friend the Chocolate Cake.

THE GOSSIP
(Bridie)

This is just a coal town
And all the people there
Are sheltering from the cold winds
On the crest of the big bleak hill

And Mary's got an argument
The argument's quite loud
And the shouting's entertainment
To the other folk around

And the gossips been getting out of hand
It's a ruthless old sound
And no ones out there working
'Cos there's none to be found
And when the steam builds up inside you
And there's no place to fall
Well there is nothing quite as harmful
As the slow moving day

It's a town that they make films about
Because the bleak's quite beautiful
When the light and the delicate features
Are captured very still

i like that the steam starts off strong and then blends into the background sky. the black and white helps emphasize that industrial mood.

Look like a lot is going on here. In reality it's a great shot but when you actually try to look at details of things it's hard to see all the little things in the center of the image. Other than that it looks great.

I must say, for being bleak, it looks quite beautiful. I love these industrial shots. Beautiful in B/W.

Black and white does such justice to industrial shots. This is very nicely done.

I like the composition with the sun peeking from behind the building. It is very bleak, but in a nice way :)

What great music to go with his wonderful photo. I don't know why, but I have always been drawn to industrial photography, and I can almost hear the music playing over the beginning of a movie showing a scene like this. And true to the words of the song: "the bleak's quite beautiful" Great photo!

excellent image lisa and this totally works in black and white .. i love that very dark area in the foreground sort'v getting lighter as you move up .. that smoke adds another point of interest .. the clouds and the smoke contrast really well with the lines of the building ... i like the way i fall into your image from the top of that rhs structure down into the innards of the factory ..

The clouds and exhaust from the smelter are really well done. I find this image quite moving, actually.

I not to familar with the song, but thee image really stands out for me.
I like the contrast of grey to black various tones, balnced with some white to bring it all together. The smoke adds to the clouds in the sky, along with the industerial darkness in the foreground.....
I actully like this quite a lot.....

Nicely titled and an excellent image of urban blight. The smoke coming out of the chminey is great in terms of standing out against the clouds (It cant be good news when the smoke stack looks clearer than the sky)

I love the range of shots you are taking for this challenge

Possible thoughts for minor tweaks

Crop a fraction higher to lose the curb?
Crop slightly to the left to losr the lamppost (which just doesnt quite have enough omph in terms of it standing out)
Maybe(????) clone out the poster on the wall (but definitely leave the graffiti)
