Shot in Raw and tonemapped, saved as JPEG
Processed by adjusting curves, levels, desaturated using single color channels. Added contrast with USM (25,50,0)
Resized for web then USM for sharpness

Taken from in the car on the way home - I'm glad I had my 18-200mm in the front seat and the top down on the car. I would have liked to take more time with set up on this one, but I needed to move because another car was coming up behind me...!

Great sky and good contrast in the details of the house; the house looks oddly warped - don't know if that's the house or the angle of your shot.

doesn't it drive you insane when you really see a cool shot and you have to hurry up because you're really not out there with a camera, trying to shoot? Wow, you did a great job even though it was a "shoot and drive" *snicker*

Maybe not so tight of a crop, and a differnt time of day to get rid of the harsh shadow.

I love looking at small houses like this, then imagine a lifestyle of what it would have been like to live in this place many years ago. Nice study in contrast.

A great pure contrast study. Good lines and a great composition.

i like the potential here. Are the surroundings usable to include and give more context to the shot? It seems like it's just a little to tight on the cropping to me.

i LOVE old and/or abandoned places, and they always make great b&w

Beautiful tonal range here. That sky really helps not only add interest but depth - the relative size / shapes of the clouds give a fascinating feeling of curving lines. I'd like to see just a tad more negative space on the right - perhaps - but you may have had a very good reason to crop it as you did. Great entry!

Magical sky really helps and supports the rest of this pleasing composition.....

I hate it, and I love it, but may perhaps if the house was centered it would help rid of the hate factor. Just something about it doesn't sit right... but the surreal of it is fantastic. Can't see how close to the ground you were, but I think maybe if a shot from off the ground to reach a sharper up angle would really add some imagination to this shot.

Ah, so you tone-mapped. That would explain why the image almost glows off the page. The sky is great. The image shows a lot of detail.

I have to say though, even though it is a great sky and a very contrasty b/w, I find two things quite distracting: (1) It's too much detail for my eyes to take in, IMVHO, a bit more subtlety would be better; (2) I wonder if a landscape orientation would work better, to include more context. As it is, the house is framed very tightly, on the left a bit of the sub-basement is cut off, the tree on the left is cut off, plus the house, to me, cries for a landscape orientation because of its shape.

Good idea though to tone-map for b/w.

Not often do you see bw show a sky up well. This time it does. The sky is amazing in your capture.

Contrast in the sky and on the house is great. I like the details here. I might have tried turning the camera a bit on this shot as it has a "leaning" feel to me-Like the house might tip over backwards. But, the corner IS lined up, lol. Guess it's just tired. Composition is nice. I do like this.

nice silvery tones here,
i notice there are some really nice shadows on the left hand wall, if you have to opportunity to go back to this place i think you could get some great high contrast details of these shadows with the windows etc..
this great image by gnarf
is the sort of thing i am talking about.
may not be possible, i dunno just thinking out loud.

Great perspective. The house is so nicely structured - almost 3-D. Clouds add a lot of drama.

I love pictures of old old houses. I love the high contrast in this one, and against that great sky! You did great for an "on the way home" find!! I wish I could have a camera of you standing up in your car in traffice taking photos :)

I really like the close side crops, with the building almost filling the bottom half.

Love the sky and the trees. Looks like it was very bright when you took this photo, light seems harsh on the house. Not sure if you could tone it down a bit.

Black and white really works here as it adds to the sense of slight dilapidation of the subject matter. I like the slightly unusual perspective. If I was going to suggest any change it might be that you went for a slightly more off centre shot

hi peter .. excellent start to this b&w challenge ... this image works so well in b&w ... very striking the contrasts between the lines on the cabin and the clouds .. the leafless branches silhouetted in that busy sky are excellent ..

Love your choice of verticle - great starting point. The clouds are lovely and I'm glad you gave them so much room.
