-Hot Glued tacks down on sheet of paper,
-Set up my lighting and details(I know, it's not perfect focus)
-Had my fiance blow bubbles that weren't very defined, so she took a puff of smoke and blew it into the bubble and had it drift down into the shot.
-I used too high of an ISO to compensate for lack of shutter speed, hence the bit of graininess you see.

I think I took something in the range of 250 photos to get the right shot with the right bubble. It was fun to do. I had another shot and wasn't sure if I should submit this one or the other.

Greetings from the Critique Club!

I like the concept here and the photograph and title made me smile. I like to offer a couple suggestions that might improve the execution.

First, it appears that you were working with a touch less light than might have been ideal. This probably forced you to have to make a couple compromises that affected the quality of the photograph.

There is just a touch of softness in the photograph. This could have come from your relatively wide aperture of f/5, or perhaps just a touch of camera shake if you were hand-holding. Use of a tripod and careful manual focusing might help there. If does look like you have sharper focus toward the center of the plane, so I think narrow DOF was your main issue there.

Also, it looks like you might have tried to compensate for the softness with heavy sharpening. You may notice a white halo effect around the pushpins. This is a common artifact of over-sharpening.

A three word sentence that a friend said to me once often sticks in my mind -- "cameras love light." This is a great example of a situation where more light would be a tremendous asset. Of course, I understand all too well that we can't necessarily always have all the equipment we'd like to have in every situation.

The use of smoke in the bubbles is a good idea as it does help to set them off. Congratulations again on a great concept. You have tremendous creativity, and that can't be bought at any price.

This is a really neat idea and you portrayed it well. I just think the focus should have been a little sharper.

Great idea, and concept the smoke is a great idea for the bubble, if this were me, levels say -50 contrast possible +15 Neat image chrominance muddy image advance preset. you would be surprised. IMHO this would have overcome your high ISO look.

Fantastic idea. I have to agree with the focus issue on this one. I think maybe the smoke in the bubble hurt you because it made the bubble look different than most.

Funny idea, and interesting solution to make the bubble more opaque.

Great idea to have the smoke in the bubble! It does indeed give it more texture. Really like the setup and the idea here, too.

I would rate this a 10 if it was better quality. It's kind of blurry.

A creative idea! I like the use of coloured pins and the fact that they are not perfectly aligned. The image seems rather noisy (grainy) which is likely the result of a high ISO. Using stronger lighting will allow the camera to use a lower ISO and help to reduce the graininess.

I think your picture is a bit out of focus, and probably a different color background could work better for you photo. Good luck

It's coming down.

Cool idea, wish it was in focus more. I still like though.

Great idea, though the actual execution of it is just not what it could be: not sharp, strange lighting on the pins (blueish?), overall wrong white balance imo. I'd love to see this shot taken again, with some extra editing and a better focus.

i like the concept a lot but there is a lot of graininess/ pixelation that is really unfortunate in macro images

A dark background and take out some of the grain, and this would be an excellent image.

This is a cute idea. I wish the photo was in focus - I would love to see the bubble and the tacks just jump out of the pic.

I'd like this more if there was more contrast between the background color and the bubble.

Needs to be MUCH sharper (heh, sorry about pun). That is, needs sharper focus. But cute idea and good composition.

For me, the colors are a little washed out, and the bubbles are lost on the white backround.

I love the idea and the composition is great - but what's up with the all-over quality of the picture?? Did you shoot it with your cell phone camera or...??

What a neat idea. The background is bleh - too noticeable. Maybe black or another color would have worked better. DOF could be a little deeper I thikn. Like the colors and composition.

Great idea; love the smoke-filled bubble. A shame the bubble itself and some of the pins seem a bit out of focus.

Awwh, I really like this. I think if the light had been pointing in the opposite direction it would've illuminated the front of the tacks and that slight fuzz wouldn't be there. Very nice, though. Very good idea.
