Location: San Diego (Carlsbad flower fields)

Aperture: f/5.6

Shutter: 1/250

The best thing about DPC is it gets me out to do things I've never done before. I've lived in San Diego for 20 years, but this is the first time I'd ever gone to the flower fields and actually got out of the car and walked around. Amazing!

btw, the flowers are ranunculas.

Post challenge:

I'm amazed so many people commented that the horizon was tilted. It's actually a hillside, and if I'd straightened the horizon, the building and trees at the top of the hill would have been tilted strongly to the left, but whatever.

The only processing on the image was to darken the clouds a bit and clone out an outhouse. The flowers are straight out of the camera. It was taken at sunset on a cloudy day. The sun dropped below the clouds for a few minutes before the sun set, and there you have it.

btw, I agree with the DOF comments. I have other shots with a shorter lens and deeper DOF, but I entered this one because the colors were so spectacular. Bad choice on my part, probably.

I love the vast range of the colors and the way each strip of color layer is layered with different focuses. Beautiful image!

Ranunculas are showy plants and it that number they are guaranteed to excite. Nice location.

I guess if you were on a slope then taking it from a different perspective, or one without the buildings so that when "straightened" it would look normal.

The other thing after looking at it again is that it needs a lot more DOF, maybe a shorter lens too.

Still like the shot though. Nice work.

this is a little blurred

The range of colors are beautiful, but none of the flowers are actually in focus - the whole image looks slightly blurred.

Love the colors and pretty good play with DOF too, gave it a 7.

Why not a straight horizon. This is falling of my screen... (and the background could be a little sharper).

I think this could have benefitted from a greater DOF.

The pshop blur on the background doesn't do it for me. Neither does the colour saturation or altering, something looks off. Otherwise a gorgeous location and shot.

Great colors. Eye-catching composition, except that I don't see the point of the tilt for this shot. (don't mind me, I'm rather anti-tilt overall). Perhaps a wee bit overprocessed, but it IS expert editing, after all.

Nice. But the building in the distance really takes away from the photo. 3

Now that's what I call a field of flowers.

oooh, wish the DOF were bigger. Great idea! I like that the center is in focus, just wish ALL the flowers were. Great colors.

Check the tutorial to straighten horizons. I think it would make this look more better. Colorful flowers though.

Great color but I think the focus is in the wrong place.

very colorful but more depth of field might make it a stronger image.

Did you spill paint on this photo? 1

too shallow depth of field. Foreground and background are out of focus. I'd like to see the entire field in focus, or at least include the full foreground

Why the tilted horizon?

If this didn't appear so tilted to me it would be an 8 or 9.

Must have been very windy. The horizon should be straight or very crooked, imho.

Lovely! The colors are absolutely perfect. A great perspective. I wonder where this is taken....

Eye-catching. A nice alternate take might be to leave out the sky entirely.

Lovely hillside of flowers. I find the soft focus not to my taste. The light seems rather flat, perhaps shooting at a different time of day (if possible) would have added more depth to the shot. Compositionally, to me, it seems out of balance with buildings on the left at the top of the slope and nothing but sky a a little tree on the right overemphasizing the slant of the hill.

While the color is good, the limited DOF and tilted horizon really throw me off, sorry.

Not sure about your choice of depth of field here. It just seems rather random to have some of the flowers in the center in focus, while everything else is blurred. The tilting doesn't really add to it either, I'm afraid.

Very nice colour variation, and well emphasized by the monotone sky.
