Yes, the photo is completely made of photos of hair. from the lake to the leaves to the background filled with trees. This is the story of Tress-Lock Forest.

I really just wanted to do something completely different from anything I've seen thus far on this site. It probably won't do well because it's not a crisp sharp photo like everyone is used to. But that's me, I like to experiment a bit and see how far I can push some of these ideas.

The photo is made from pasteing, clipping, copying and tormenting four photos I took of my and my fiance's hair. I created the scene from scratch but was inspired by a painting I had done some time back. It took probably about 4 hours from time of taking the photos to submittal.
-The Foreground and tree are made from her wavy hair that was let down;
-The branches from her hair in braids as well as the forest in the background;
-I rotated her photo around numerous times to get the right angles for the trees, the trunk and roots.
-The lake is also her hair after tinting it a bit blue and tuning in the opacity to create a nice reflection.
-I made the reflection from the same tree, just rotated and copied.
-The man is actually from my hair as a negative(inverting the color) and changed to black and white. I actually had a big blob to start and erased the body and form of the man gazing into the forest.

Like I said, I don't expect it to score high, so thank you for all your support, and I do understand that this is not going to appeal to everyone's taste. But it's simply an image to just enjoy.

..and I hope you all enjoy it as much as I did creating it.

Wow, this is absolutely amazing. Apparently this challenge happened during my recovery from the accident, otherwise you'd have had another 10 to add to your grouping.
ABSOLUTELY AWESOME.

Just came across this amazing photo of yours. What creativity and inspiration. And you really used the Expert Editing to its fullest. Sorry it didn't score higher, but know you created a beautiful piece of art that apparently many have enjoyed, and I do, too!

You are a very creative individual. Did you ever think about writing a book or short story on something you see? Definitely look into it, you seem to have very descriptive thought!

and Thank you for the nice comments.

Congrats on the OOBIE! I thought this was cool and gave it a 7 during the challenge. Very symbolic and surreal. The leaves are my favorite part.

Greetings from the CC,

Wow! What a labour of love! I feel like I'm critiquing a painting rather than a photograph, which isn't necessarily a bad thing. All photographs have an art component to some degree, and you have certainly conveyed your artistic side here. There are great colours, interesting textures, and good contrast in this image.

The problem many had, I believe, is that it no longer appears to be a photograph. This is certainly a work of art (and a good one, in my opinion), but this is primarily a competition of photography. Although the pictures of the hair are your originals, they've been used as a texture to create a painting, not a photograph.

With that being said, there's not much technically lacking with this shot. Everything is crisp (except the outline of the tree bark along the trunk), and actually looks like a forest scene if you let your imagination run wild a bit. The tree is well-positioned, and the falling leaves are a nice touch.

I can't do much else to critique this image, since there aren't many photographic elements beyond those I've already discussed. Artistically, this is stunning, so I can see why it scored as well as it did. Since this is a photography site, I can also see why it didn't score even better.

Overall, I like it!

Regards,
Geoff Ball

This is fantastic and it looks to me like a great children's book illustration (hope you don't find that comparison insulting). There's a delightful whimsy to it - a wonderfully creative and OOB take on the challenge requirements!

Thank you guys and gals for all of your support on this photo. Your comments lifted my spirits pretty high and they were definitely greatly appreciated!

I don't mind that this photo placed where it did. It was meant to be rather controversial to begin with due to the Expert editing, but the fact that you are suppose to stay true to the "integrity" of the photo. I like to take different spins on that. Most people think that you add to photos to enhance them, instead of enhancing my photo by adding, I simple subtracted the surroundings of the photos in order to get a surreal, or as most of you thought, a "publication or illustration" type photo. Still felt I was true to photo quality, but I guess you can only add images or filters in order for a picture to stay true.

I had fun doing it though and it's permanentely part of my portfolio now.

Thank you again for all of your support, I love hearing from you all. Hopefully, there will be more creative original ideas that come out to add some more controversy and discussion. (And maybe a ribbon in the distant, distant future!)

okay, enough now, my head is swelling! (no sexual undertone intended)

Completely underrated image - It is amazing to look at the histogram of voting and seeing 23 10s and a score of only 5.9. I think some 'got' the image a little more than others...

While this may be legal in expert and while I think it is very creative and artistic, it will probably be relinquished to the middle of the pack because of its "digital art" factor. I like it though - would make a nioce print actually.

Hope you didn't cough up a hair-ball after this one. I can't imagine the time required to build this painting. And, hmmmmm I'm a little worried about where some of this hair came from! The most unique in the challenge so far. Good luck.

Love this painting, very well done. Pity it won't do so well on this "pure fanatical photography only" site :( The border is not really my cup of tea especially contrasting against the lighter luminance values at the top of the image. (8)....
