quadtones, layers layer layers! texture, multiply, screen, high pass, um..... lots of each. o yeah, and repositioned the bush on the right to better balance the crow.

the horizon is not tilted - it's A HILL!!!!!!!!!!!!!! A H I L L

wow. how many images scoring under 5 have so many 9 and 10 scores? is a good thing - great comments from those whose opinions i value.

here's the original. it was a gawdawful snowy day. i had to wipe the lens every couple of shots. as you can see, the sky on the horizon was actually dark, it was so grimy that day. and, yes, i know i have bad dust buffaloes.

Another 2-point difference between average and commenters, plus lots of comments. That says a lot.

Had I voted on this, I probably would've given it a 7 or 8. I think it's very emotive - really drives home the idea of a desolate landscape. The bird is just terrific!

This is incredible - I love the dark, dreary look. Great work.

I love that you vignetted the sky separately from the ground. I'll be the first to admit that you sometimes lean on vignetting too much, but it is a fine, creative use of it here. This image is so close to nothing at all that it becomes divine.

I feel this would look awesome in a much larger format, I think the size restriction here hurt your score, I came back to it three times before voting to really take it all in, great shot!! Love the sky.

Very subtle, works well, good burn technique. I think it is just too much for this crowd. It reminds me of old B&W movies. The mood almost gives me a creepy feel though (a good thing). Curious what the original looked like. I know I couldn't "realize" a shot like this.

You got SO robbed on this, Christian! I was one of your 8's. You are truly a master at subtlety.

I think you did good I suck at postprocessing so I will never give comments on that.

Definitely a risky entry in a challenge full of vibrantly colored photos. But a good entry nonetheless, the bird really makes this photo. I like the parchment paper look of this.

I am a big sucker for vignetting but here I don´t think it really helps regarding the vignetting on the ground. Nicely minimalistic, I like it although I don´t love it.

You're probably getting hit pretty hard on this one, just a guess knowing dpc voters. personally I love it. Starkness, desolate land. Nice. Horizon slightly off.

Simple yet highly effective. The lone bird adds to the image. Perhaps the dodging? is a little uneven. Anyway, 9.

Cool shot but the horizon is tiled. Maybe that's the way it actually looks though. Nice job. 7

I love the sky in this shot. Ground - not so much. I'd prefer all of it in focus, including the foreground...

Such a great piece of art. The soft tones and lack of clarity and scale add a lot to this piece as a very abstract landscape that refers more to feeling than literal association. Great job.

Bleak, cold, desolate - a good capture of mood. I find myself being bothered by the slightly tilted horizon, although I admit I don't think a perfectly level horizon would improve the image. If it were level, I wouldn't be bothered, I'd be bored. :) Started this at a 7, bumping to an 8.

I like the minimalist presentation though I'm not crazy about the tilted horizon. The post production is very good. Good luck!

wonderful! the bird and the tree (?) are excellent! cool lighting, too
bumping from 8 to 10 after viewing all the entries.
the lighting is not just cool, it is excellent.
it looks like your used some special shooting method, but i don't know much about them and can't say what exactly it is.
do you get comments saying the horizon line should be straight?:)
it is one of the finest examples of real fine art I have seen. I would like to have it on the wall, really.
