From the Critique Club

I have to view this shot from two different perspectives. One, as a photographer, and two, as a person.

First the photographer point of view: This shot is about as perfect technically as a shot can be. The focus is right on and the lighting is right on also. The shot is also nice and sharp where it needs to be. I do think that the main dollar sign symbol should be more out of focus though. Color wise I don't really like it though. It really doesn't look like 'The Color of Money'. I know that currency around the world is of different color schemes, but when I think money I think of a darker green. 'The Sign of Money' may have been a better title. Technically perfect, compositionally a few minor flaws that do not really detract.

Now the hard part, the 'ME' point of view: I'm sorry, but I have to agree with many of the commentors on this photo. This type of shot is kind of like a trick billiards shot. It's impressive the first time you see it, but once you know the trick it's never has the same impact! This shot HAS been done before here, sometimes better, sometimes not quite as good. There really is no creativity to it. All you did was put a dollar sign under the glass! Also IMHO once you know the 'trick' there isn't a lot of skill here either. It's a camera shot. I can't do the shot because I don't have the camera. You do. On an intellectual level I can not fault you for using your camera to it's limits, on an emotional level, I'm a little jealous (bitter maybe) that I can not equal this no matter how many times I try it with my camera.
TC

Hello, I recently discovered this DP Challenge, I do not know when to submit my photos. Can you send me some information. Thank You. Angel

I want to congratulate you for the ribbon. As I say in my comment during the voting time... I know it was done before. So what? I don't know anything that it hasn't been done before. The photography is judged after all by how was it done... the qualities it has... no by how many times was done before. I want a ribbon too. I know that water drop pictures goes well. If I take a picture of a water drop it will bring me the ribbon? Not likely. Depends how the photo will turn out to be. Not every one of us can take a picture like this one. Not me, anyway. And to end this... I find that a ribbon for this photo is well deserved.

I'm sorry to say that, but the lack of originality of this kind of entry is one of the reasons I don't feel like participating to the challenges here anymore. It's difficult to appeal to people if you don't come up with a water drop picture...
Very well executed though.

Congrats Terry on the win, its a very nice droplet photo. Now don't be afraid to rub it in on those who complained about the cliche and overdone effect. Cause you got the ribbon and they didn't!

Hmm... probably the most overdone effect on the website. You've recreated it well, but it's become boring.
12/09/2003 03:46:48 AM
i'm getting sick of this cliche.. if you win, i'll be pissed off.
12/08/2003 10:47:00 PM
very cool! I predict a winner! Even though this technique has been done a few times before I still love it, nice work! 10

Wow, another money-coloured photo. :-) Although I am not fan of lots of waterdrops, they are excellent here with the $ reflections in them! :-)

I know it was done before, but I like it and I think it will make an excellent print. So 10 from me.

Excellent detail, think the green could have been a bit darker, just a nit, but a 10 anyway.

An idea seen many times before (I did it as well). Execution is o.k. but some drops show refractions of the surroundings, very clearly visible in the top left area. Should have shielded the surroundings or play with the size of, and distance to the paper.

Well done. This technique always impresses me.

fun, lovely. I like the diagonal, the green cast, nice scattering of water droplets. Nicely done 9

Seen this sort of thing so many times before but this is really well executed and very effective. Think it breaks the rules though. You're not allowed any money symbols.

Technical: Fits the challenge well. Exposure composition focus lighting all excellent.

Personal: I'm relatively new to the site but I know I've seen at least two other shots like this one (background subject repeated in droplets). I'm all for praticing techniques, but it might be overdone at this point for submitting to challenges.

My vote: 7

Very well done, but obviously derivative, and why that title given the muted shades here? Yeah, it's kind of green, but the whole world's currency is not that shade necessarily ...

good response to challenge, color is very interesting - far paler and sharper than I would have thought and yet it works, good clarity and focus

Aha! the infamous water drops technique strikes again!! I like the diagonal in it but the faded green doesn't do it for me. Overall a good shot though. :-) 7

I gave you a ten because I love the effect but on a side note isn't the color of money green? On my monitor this looks more yellow with a slight hint of green. Just a sidebar. Great job --love the picture.
