 My first staged photo (up until now, everything I've ever taken has been a snapshot). Cleared off a desk and arranged some of my study materials. Next, I used a white undershirt to diffuse light coming from a desklamp on the left. There was also a small ceiling light (also covered w/ a shade) behind me which kept causing problems at first due to the camera's shadow.

Not sure if many people can tell the intent to make everything look slightly out of focus, but I hope it comes across well.

Good job on your first set up shot!
You did a great job with the lighting and soft focus here. Your choice of b&w works well here.
My only suggestions would be to have angled the book differently so we dont see the ucla stamp. I also would have removed the papers from the upper left hand corner. They make the layout a little busy and are picking up too much light(brings my attention there).
