Critique Club review:

Hi Cole,

I loved this shot. Not only did the shot hit the mark on the challenge, but we had a late 40+ child 10 months ago, so it hit home. The challenge was met well.

The set-up and subject were great. The overall cropping was right on. Bringing the subject in closer (womans face) was perfect and her expression made the shot. The modifiers; the box, bithday note, and tester were lined up nicely too. Colors all appear to work well with no distractions anywhere. The contrasts are nice, especially her hair. DOF was done quite well.

The only down fall, and only slightly, would be the flash. The shadow on the face from the glasses, and reflections of the glasses are a bit distracting, but like I said, minimally. The light from the light above worked and maybe a reflected light on the face would have made a bit different look.

Overall you made a great shot. It was humerous, especially to me a 50+er with a young'un.

I hope this helped a bit. Keep up the fun and shots.

Van

This is funny....and what a surprise too! I like both the humor and the element of surprise.

Nice idea for this challenge... I like your composition on this shot... good lighting. The look on her face is classic... real or set up??? :-)

a genuine surprise situation

A gpod set up and generally well done! I think it might have been good to be a little more subtle than the sign in the background. A small investment in a hallmark birthday card, laying on the table. And the pregnancy kit placed more "naturally" on the table. Finally, a position with ajust a little more face towards the camera. But these are just for feedback, I do like the idea and shot.

I almost used this theme, but couldn't get a positive sample for the test kits I have ...

Good use of thirds with the face showing surprise. Nice focus. Hope it's a good surprise

You are on the right path. Not that I'm good at set ups, but concerning this picture, here is what I would change to make it more "real". The test box is placed to square in the composition. The Happy birthday sign is too big and obvious. Buy, make or use an old card and place it somewhere within the scene where it looks casual. The lighting is good and I like the expression as the model looks at the results. Use some more props such as pens, papers, electronics, so the scene doesn't look to sterile(pun not intended) and unused. It looks oversharpened also.

ahh but was it ping or blue ;)

Ooops, this would be a good one :-)) This is well lit, the colours are fine, but it seems a bit oversharpened in few spots that pixelates it (her hair and glasses). The triangle composition works well.

Awesome idea. Wish I'd thought of it. It looks like the picture pixelated a little.

Good idea and good shot. Maybe a bit over sharpened here and there. The idea is super.

I'm sure that some people find this more surprising than others. I also had this idea but dropped it for another one. You did it perfectly though and I applaud you for your effort. It is great. A 9 from me.

*laugh* Absolutely love it! I thought of this as well but was too cheap to go buy a test kit ;) Lovely photo and ther look on the girl's face is lovely as she looks genuinely surprised.
