Went to the flea market today. I wanted something with lots of color to show. A lot of this stuff is local harvest. I waited until late when most of the people would be gone so as not to need to deal with releases. The place is full of shoppers earlier in the day.
Direct from camera. It's overcast here today, so not much shadow. Zoom at 18mm, ev +1 , no flash, polarizer, hand held.

another option from the change of composition to control the lighting: Use your flash even in daylight. It takes some adjusting to get the effects you want, but doing so will let you really fill in the shadows on a face or give a vibrant feel to colors that are sitting in the shade. If you have a bounce flash, bounce it off the top of the tent and watch those fruits and veggies come to life!

I like the long line of fruit wth the vendor at the far end. the sky on the right is a little blown out an maybe could have been cropped out, just my opinion, but the white trucks seem to take the eye away from the color.

I love all the flea markets and fresh produce stands we have down here in Florida. I too would like to get photos of them one of these days.

Unless you're planning on selling the photos, you don't really need a release. If you are going to take a direct picture of someone, it is best to ask if it's okay first. And if you're shy about just straight out asking, start with small talk, get to know them a bit first, then ask. I'm actually very shy too but I started asking people a bit and I'm surprised to say that most of the time, they don't really mind, and the few that do, I just don't take a picture of.
In this picture, I see great vision! You have a lot of the right ideas but missed a bit on the execution. I biggest problem is the harshness between the light on the ground and the light on the fruits and veggies. It's outside, you can't really control the sun, so not much you can do about it. But you can change the composition of your shot to remove as much of the brighter areas as possible and not have to deal with the harsh lighting. Maybe get closer, or zoom in and get more of the fruit in focus. Secondly, I LOVE the person manning the booth in this picture. It just screams of 'story'. Now I know you're shy, but I would love to see a picture of her, at her booth. With the red truck in the background and the colored fruit in front (or is it flowers she's selling?), it would make a great portrait. You would be able to both show of the local produce and the local people at the same time. Anyway, just an idea.

hi waddy ... looks like a great place to buy your fruit and vegs ... great colours .. it could've worked with lots of ppl too ... i find it a bit confonting taking pics of strangers in public places .. but i'm getting over it!!
edit ... just re-read your comment and noticed you said 'so you didnt have to deal with releases' .. is that when you've got to ask ppl's permission to take their photo?
