Shot of the Logan LDS Temple at night. Still limited by my equipment, this shot is hand-held at 1/5 sec. To reduce the shutter speed a bit (and to keep the highlights of the towers from blowing out), I under-exposed -0.6EV, and metered off the brightest points. My wife thinks I should have submitted one of my other photos from this shoot, but to me, this one best exemplified the challenge.

Technical:
Underexposed -0.6EV as mentioned above. I performed significantly more PS work than I normally do:

Adjusted highlight/midtone/shadow settings slightly to decrease the intensity of the brightly lit towers. Desaturated, converted to grayscale, then increased contrast to provide a bit more 'pop'. Converted back to RGB color, duotoned with a hue of 15 and saturation of 10. Cropped, bordered, and saved for submission.

Greetings, from the Critique Club.

This image has an elegance to it that doesn’t immediately jump out at the viewer. A person has to actually LOOK at this shot to appreciate the delicate balance between light, aperture and shutter speed.

I like how the bell towers/steeples stand out against the night skyâ€Â¦also the tree silhouetted against the light on the building is a very subtle touch. The visual flow of this shot is great. My eye starts with the tree on the rightâ€Â¦goes up to the steeple and follows the roofline to the other steepleâ€Â¦then down the back of the building. By the way, great job of handholding this shot, the lack of sharpness doesn’t bother me a bit.

I think your exposure is almost perfect; although, I feel there are a couple of overexposed points in the bell towers/steeples and the darkness/blacks are a touch grey. Of course, if you were to stop down any more, you’d lose the details in the building, so yupâ€Â¦there’s some give and take with a shot like this. Another thing to noteâ€Â¦I have my monitor set a touch bright in order to see details in images with a lot of darkness, this may have something to do with how I’m seeing your shot.

I hope this helps,
Quadrajet

Good time of night to photograph this! I like the point of view here; it makes it look grand and important. Lighting gives it a sacred feel. Nice work! 9

This is a lovely building and the lighting is very dramatic overall on the building. The trees sadly take so much away from the overall effect of the shot, maybe from a different side or angle? A 6

I really like this, the DOF is brilliant, the two towers at the top are also great. A little sharper and I would have made this a 10. 9 from me.

A tough exposure to get right. The buildings could really do with some more contrast

good use of sepia tones. The perspective is good but I'm rather feeling as though it will all tip over. A bit straighter in the frame would have helped. 7

Nice shot......great composition. The contrast between the buildings and the top steeples(?) is very attractive. 7

I like how the trees are silouetted against the light of the building. I like the progression from black at the bottom the white at the top.

Very nice angle, extraordinary exposure. I always think the Logan temple is under-photographed.
