 Be careful under these situations or you will end up blowing away the blackground or underexposing your subject, or both as I managed here to perfection ;)

So always expose for both subject and background and then decide which combination (of shutter speed and aperture) will give you the best results, how many stops is the difference between both readings? sometimes your middle point will be your best option. Remember that if you are shooting RAW you will have the option of combining two exposures. Or if there is no changing conditions of light or movement then you could even take more RAW shots to improve the HDR even more.

Ok that image is the anti-lesson of keeping both subject and background in detail or its a good example for making silhouettes ;)

BTW it looks way cooler when you have more hair and curves ;)
