in an effort to combine as many patterns as i could inside a macro photo i...

put a marble on a stretched piece of window screen. about 12" below is a piece of glass with a colored striped napkin stretched across it at about a 45deg angle to the pattern in the screen. the marble is pushed down to make a dimple in the screen material. 550ex with omnibounce laying on floor under glass aiming up perpendicular to stripes on napkin @ +3. M focus - spray with glycerin/water - snap away. a very small aperture was used in combination with a powerful light source allowed me to get a DOF and exposure i was happy with.

the RAW file was very green and the colors were adjusted to my liking.

PP -
rotate slightly & crop
adjustment layers for:
levels - set white & black points
curves
color balance
selective color
hue/saturation
USM - 350 : 0.8 : 4
resize for web
USM - 100 : 0.4 : 4
edit stroke - inside - 10px black

unfortunately i had to save this at 63% quality to meet the 150KB limit. the 640px version @ 100% qaulity was over 550KB ! also the purple blotch toward the bottom left of the marble bugs me, but i couldn't do too much about that. i cloned it out for the print version.

the subject of the photo creates itself from a variety of patterns intermingled with each other via a contrast of colors and shape.

the pattern of the window screen also creates an optical illusion - dots are visible at the intersetions of the verticals and horizontals - outside of the eyes main focal point.

what may appear to be a digital rendering is actually a straight up photo with a bit of digital darkroom tuning, i hope i am not voted down based on assumptions...

merry christmas !!

a number of interesting concepts - some of which i've tried (to much less success ;)

my biggest problem with the image is the darkness of the marble does not enhance the grid but detracts from the whole pattern
i really like the abstracts in the grid - and may have to investigate that futher myself ;)

This shot is very interesting to me technically - meaning I really like the way the marble is bending the screen from it's weight. Reminds me of the models that represent the bending of space and time.

Artistically, if the subject, the marble, were fully in frame and lighter (brighter) than it is, perhaps looking like it was lit from the inside, I would easily give this shot a 7 or 8. That would have added the needed 'wow' punch for me. As the shot is currently set up, I would have voted this a 6.

Hope that helps!

I always tell people that you really need to smack people in the face with the challenge topic. In this case, though, I think it's almost overkill. Pattern for the sake of pattern with not much else. I agree with Wavelength, it's a bit painful to look at.

A bit dark or over contrasty to me. Having not read the image title, I stared at it thinking the round thing was a bowl of something. Different, interesting, but too much blackness, IMO to be a top contender. A 5.8 is pretty decent though. Woulda been a 6 from me. Hope this is useful.

Really excellent image, great colors, and nice breaking up of the patterns (the net and below the net) with the marble.
