To make this a better photo I recommend placing the tree to the side. This way it appears the tree is coming out of the gentleman's back. Also a closer crop to get rid of the chair, lamps, coats and books would have been better.

Very busy, moving in closer or zooming in tighter would help eliminate the distracting background clutter.

Cropping this vertically would help to remove the background clutter (chairs, book case, coats, lamps etc and would tend to favour the vertical subjects (people/ xmas tree)

Would like to read the background story to this shot. It immediately made me feel sad, Christmas without children, huddled up indoors with warm coats and a blanket, getting old........must be my state of mind :-)
