Photograph Information Photographer's Comments
Challenge: HDR (Advanced Editing V*)
Camera: Canon EOS-1D Mark IIn
Lens: Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L USM
Location: Warwick West Gate on Jury Street, Warwick, UK
Date: Nov 12, 2006
Aperture: 22
ISO: 50
Shutter: Various 7 1/64 - 1.6
Galleries: Travel, Digital Art
Date Uploaded: Nov 12, 2006

Shots taken in increments ( long waits between each shot due to pedestrians and traffic) started at -3 and worked my way up to +3 shooting at 1 EV increments ending up with 7 shots of the same scene.

Ran through Photomatix

Cleaned up dust spots and cloned small area out on the left and a little detail of the road which was distracting. added a small S curve, cropped slightly and resized to 640x426 and saved for web.

I really like the shot and glad the HDR 24 hour challenge came up as I shot a few location in my home town and this was my favourite after editing although when shooting I felt it was the weakest scene. Hope the voters like it but at least it has made me step outide my comfort zone and learn something new.

Please Check out my HDR Portfolio which I will be adding to over the coming monhts to hopefully do the whole of the Warwickshire touristy properties.

The Picture was taken in Warwick (Warwickshire - UK), which is just outside of Coventry an Birmingham (central UK), alot of the town is olde worldy but this is the Lord Leycester Hospital which although called a hospital has never actually been a medical establishment...

With the moody sky and varying colours of the traditional walls I felt the HDR would show thie texture of this quite well and turns out it did, although the letter box is very vibrant I like it !!! Yet my favourite minimalism peice of detail is the road when yuo see the full size version up close.

Thanks for all the wonderful comments too :0)

Sorry I didn't comment earlier. I really like this shot and gave it a 10. Where is your home town? This reminds me of Ludlow, England.

That's such a classic bit of history, the town gate. I can imagine what it looked like on a busy day 400 or so years ago. I like your rendition too. It reminds me of those little gouache or watercolour paintings one used to see in England's many teashops (now sadly gone for the most part).

Maybe overdone on the processing, it's borderline for sure, but an excellent photo nonetheless.

Good contrast and color. Good work on the HDR, there are no nasty halos to be seen. I like the sharpness and the detail in this image.

Eeek, the buildings look like they're going to fall over! But. I think that is just the style of archetecture and not a flaw in your photo. I like the colors, although the red at the left distracts a tiny bit, and I like the way the road and sidewalk lead my eye towards the arch.

Nicely done. I think it would be nicer if you lost some of the raodway along the bottom. 8

Nice use of HDR to bring out the interesting clouds while allowing proper illumination on the really interesting buildings in the foreground. I would have dropped the saturation on the colors a little - the greens are a little too vibrant for my taste.

The HDR processing on this gives it a much more of surrealistic look. It does seem to give a lot of depth and dimension to the photo, though. I really do like this scene and composition, maybe the railing on the left side of the road could be eliminated or be used to more effectively balance the photo. One of my top two pick, great job!

This got a 7 from me. I like the HDR process, I wish you had bumped the colors up just a touch and maybe added a bit more contrast to it. I also feel like I'm going downhill. Maybe it really is but I feel I need to lean to the left to look at for any length of time, and that hurts my neck. Overall nicely done. Good luck.

Not much of a photograph left here I think. Maybe you shouldn't have pushed to controls that far to the right?

another tip for the top slots here i think they are very few in this challenge but this should be top 5 at least if not a ribbon

What a beautiful scene! A work of art. As little as I know about HDR, this seems like such a perfect representation of the range of light, shadows and color! I just love this photo! 10

I find myself in two minds about this one: On a photographic level my brain just can't adjust to it - it is too far removed from how I interpret what my eyes see in reality. That said, I actually rather like it in a sort of jigsaw puzzle painting way - sounds rather as though I am damning it with feint praise, but I am scoring 8, because I do find it curiously attractive, because it is a well composed appealing scene, and because you have avoided the pitfall of horrible skies and halos around the subjects.

Lovely job. My guess is it's in the western counties of England. Bristol, Chester, that sort of area. ;>รพ
