thanks for the blue :) its been a long week watching the score
I just hope that I get to keep this one

this is the Macquarie lighthouse on south head Vaucluse in Sydney and is Australia's oldest light house. You are actually looking at the rear of the lighthouse there is a 50m cliff on the other side down to the pacific ocean

converted from raw with rawshooter pro:
exposure +0.1
fill light +5
shadow contrast +10
highlight contrast -10
vibrance -25
strong S curve to darken sky and shadows and lighten clouds
rotate and crop
export as tiff

edit with PS2 :
change to B&W with channel mixer and only used the green channel as this had the least noise
used slight curves to add further contrast
burnt the clouds to darken and reduce highlights
burnt diamond pattern to highlight the pattern
dodged the foreground, trees and fence to add some detail to the shadow areas
dodged the light section to bring the original lightness back
light sharpen
resize and output sharpening
add border and save for web

Congrats on the blue. Your photo has made me incredibly homesick. I used to go to Vaucluse Boys High School situated about 400m from the light house. The Macquarie Lighthouse was our school emblem and our motto 'Lumen Scientia'. I am writing this from an incredibly crappy place in Iraq. When I come home next year I'll resume my interrupted photography learning. Congrats again and well done.

The contrast in this picture is astounding. It really highlights many different aspects of this picture, but doesn't overdo it. It really helps to focus the main idea of this picture.

Mate. Awesome stuff. Haven't checked in in a while, and found this on the front page when I did. So you got the wide angle obviously - and black and white too - this is one sweet shot, be proud.

We should catch up sometime soon, give us a bell.

Congratulatons, it's a terrific capture. I didn't know there were such lighthouses still in Sydney (but then I'm not a Sydneysider...)

perhaps a tad underexposed.

11/18/2006 04:20:37 PM
Those clouds are bizarre - look so close and artificial- I think that will bump the score up here. Almost like the image is divided into two worlds, one mundane and one imaginary.
  Photographer found comment helpful.
11/17/2006 09:31:46 PM
Hey - where did you get those clouds? Is there some place I can buy those? This rocks! Back to bump you to 8.
  Photographer found comment helpful.
11/17/2006 01:46:31 PM
Great capture of the sky on this one. The fine curve along the back edge of the clouds from the left to right side of the composition with the fairly unblemished background make this one a 10.
  Photographer found comment helpful.
11/17/2006 11:32:34 AM
A starnge photo - the sky seems somehow seperate from the rest of the photo. Nonetheless, as a black and white photo it utilises the full range of shades from b through to w, and is earning an 8 from me.

Oh the clowds are impressive... like 3D.

Back for a second look and definatly bumping up. Love the sky the beautiful highlights and shadows make it outstanding. Love the lighting on the tower. My only complaint is the flat black foregound. Maybe if you had cropped a little higher this wouldn't have been a distraction to the rest of the beautiful image.
