Greetings from the Critique Club: I have been assigned your photo to critique and here are my thoughts:

Personal Reaction: I liked this right away when I saw it and wondered how you did it.

Composition: Great composition. Offset subject worked well. The rays on the umbrella are a strong point of focus. Preserving the shadows on your model’s back was a good choice.

Technicals: Met the challenge very well. Focus is very good. How you got your model to stand perfectly still while the umbrella twirled is puzzlement. Nice colors. Good contrast. I can’t find any fault with the technical execution.

Conclusions: I didn’t vote on this but if I had, I would have given this a 6. So my view is it got the score it deserved. It is minimalist but appealing eye candy. Unfortunately it competed against some very strong photos which held the score down in my view.

As always, this is my personal opinion. Feel free to PM me if you’d like further dialog.

A great photo is one that first evokes a reaction/feeling from the viewer as soon as they see it. Afterwards comes the closer look and better understanding of the image. While simple, this photo does evoke reaction/feeling (smile/pleasure) and is a technically solid. Having the subject all black/sillhoutted under the umbrella and/or enhancing the color/saturation of the blue in the sky could add to the image. Overall, really good and deserves a high score.

Oh, yes. This is a nice, original idea. Like the monochromatic colors as well.
