Challenge: Long Exposure II (Advanced Editing IV)
Camera: Canon EOS-5D
Lens: Canon EF 16-35mm f/2.8L USM
Location: Peak District National Park
Date: Nov 2, 2006
Aperture: 214 seconds
ISO: 400
Shutter: f22
Date Uploaded: Nov 3, 2006

Taken just outside the Peak District National Park on my way home from the office. A nice clear sky and reasonably strong moonlight are essential for this shot. The shot was nearly 4 minutes exposure whilst I ran along the line and fired the flashgun at each windmill in turn. The further down the line the less effective the flash.

Thanks everyone for the kind comments. I never expected this to ribbon let alone blue!!

PS Work:

Crop with perspective to fix the exhagerated distortion of the 16-35 when tilted upwards.

Levels to nail the black and white point
Curves to add contrast
Colour Saturation.
2 runs through Neat Image - remove ALL NOISE. This was essential as the image was very noisy.
Cloned out a minor communications tower between the 1st and 2nd windmills - not significantly changing the image, but risky in these new rules.
Added a layer in Softlight mode, filled with 50% grey and then painted black/white to dodge burn. This is where I brought out the faint movement of the blades.
Selective colour to make the sky blue rather than muddy blue/black.
Plenty more playing with the hue/saturation to get the right tone for the sky.
Dodge and burn the windmill towers using same technique as previously described.

I think this image is absolutely stunning Keith. A lot of thought has gone into this picture. I would never have thought of running down the line with the flashgun, let alone being able to!

A well deserved blue ribbon.

A simply amazing image. You were well-rewarded for your vision and your efforts. I'm curious about how much illumination you would have had without the flash - by moon alone? Again, kudos. This photo is quite an accomplishment!
