Looks like there are a handful of chess players at DPChallenge. :D

Where was the King sitting? May not be checkmate!
10/31/2006 08:06:10 AM
That's not checkmate yet... is it? :)
10/31/2006 01:20:06 AM
The lighting seems a bit flat and the image has a grainy feel to it. I'm also not sure that the black king is in checkmate - E8 has moves to F7 & D7. 5

just currious how this was check mate. which square was the king supposed to be on and why is the white king off the board? Next time you set up a check mate you might want it to look like a real game and a real check mate.
10/28/2006 01:17:34 AM
Checkmate how? And white's king is already off the board. Less clutter and better lighting would help, along with some angle.

Hmm, borderline meeting challenge, but i'll agree it does. Hoever, the color is not great and the contrast, well, it's terrible. Seem noisy too. You need some work on your post production.

Image seems noisy and lacking in contrast. Concept is good, but I think execution could be a bit better. Composition seems busy and crowded; maybe a lower angle or different slant of the board might help. Chess boards and pieces are difficult to shoot and make them look dynamic. I appreciate the effort.

The tone of this image feels murky to me (vs. warm). I like the perspective and the arrangment of the pieces. The eye is drawn directly to the felled black king. Alas, I feel the challenge intended to be a *sports* venue (athletic game) not the broader game.
10/27/2006 11:34:39 AM
that isnt a checkmate, the king could have moved to F7, and white has no king

HEHE, the way the pieces are set up doesn't even make it a check mate. nice perspective.

Nice try on challenge interpretation, but the execution didn't make it work. The contrast is way too flat, particularly for an indoor shot like this, and it looks to have a yellow-greenish cast to it. I know this is nit-picky, but having played chess, I can't think of a way the pieces could have gotten into this layout, and in the way I'm used to playing, the captured pieces would be on opposite sides (white player keeps black pieces, and vice-versa). With a couple things fixed, though, this would have been a nice shot.

Not sure how that became check mate with the queen and rook on the same line... seems like the king could move up to line 7.
10/26/2006 09:58:27 AM
A bit of a contrived "end game" but the approach to the theme challenge works well. The image itself is somewhat grainy and flat (could use some noise reduction and added contrast). Good luck in the challenge.

nice idea, the noise is visible and the lighting could be much better

Really noisy. I also think you would benefit from a little more room, crop is tight and off center but what do I know.

a bit low on contrast..a 4 for your effort

mmmm the angle of view isn't very good. there is a cut on the left and on the field there isn't the white king and the position of other pieces is impossible. good the colours and sharpness.

It is a bit grainy, but a well set up shot

I have a chess set similar to this one.

I like this idea, I just find the focus / sharpness? to be a little off what it needs to be.

this is a good concept. maybe a white tabletop and top view could have added more impact

I really like this idea. The fact that the board is slightly cut off on left distracts me a bit. A 7.

No stadium, field, event center, arena, etc.?
10/25/2006 02:23:40 AM
I am not sure this satisfies the challenge which was photographing the venue of a sporting event after the game is finished.
10/25/2006 01:41:41 AM
DNMC, not a "sporting venue"
