Challenge: Dreams and Nightmares (Classic Editing)
Camera: Canon EOS-10D
Location: Bank parking garage, 5th level - Dallas, Texas
Date: Oct 3, 2003
Aperture: F5.0
ISO: 200
Shutter: 1/125s
Galleries: Emotive, Landscape
Date Uploaded: Oct 5, 2003

This idea came to me when my wife and I were in the bank parking garage on the 5th level. When I looked down over the parking garage railing is when I got the idea.

I used the the camera in continuous shot mode using my 28-90mm lens and zoomed (manual mode) while taking numerous shots before I got the one I liked.

No Photoshop filters were used.
Level adjustments and frame only.
No cropping was done.

I used the yellow frame because my eyes were wanting to get off the image due to the falling feeling. The yellow frame sort of contained my eyes on the photo.

This 640x427 image shows a strong falling feeling but the feeling is quite stonger with the 3072x2048 original.

Thanks for all the support and comments.

Hey Robin,

Unfortunalty I didn’t vote on the Dreams and Nightmares challenge, however I do really like this shot.
The idea of a falling dream/nightmare works well as I guess it relates to a lot of people, I know it does me. That along with the zoom effect, an effect I have seen used a few times on DPC before and it really hasn’t worked for me. In the past I don’t think the feeling of motion generally suits the pictures I have seen. However in this case the effect creates the main impact of the image. A kind of interaction between the photograph and the viewer, almost like a magic eye.

As far as the actual scene its self is concerned it feels as if it is cropped a little too much, I think I would have preferred a wider angle to show more of the scene. Although I guess that would have made it harder to get the required angle to give the impression of falling, without taking the photograph from a higher position. Although I guess the best tribute to this photo is the number of people who actually experienced the falling sensation :-)

I don’t know if it was done for a reason but personally, I would like to have the horizontal and vertical borders the same width. But overall very well done.

Tom.

Great photo, I too thought you'd place higher. Considering how many people commented on how they got the feeling of falling just looking at the pic, you definitely should have gotten higher. Well done!

Ok, I am such a goof, that when I went to add text to my original comment on this image, I accidentally removed it. Please forgive me.

I missed the point of this photo the first time around. Thank you for explaining it to me. It makes total sense now as does the border around it. I also know why I didn't get it the first time. It has to do with my own perception of what you are trying to convey.

Now that I had time to think about it, I think this would have been more powerful if it were shot from higher above. It only looks few feet of the ground. That's why it didn't click with me as fear of heights. I stil stand by my original comment that it is a pretty good photo. So there you have it, I am done for now :-))) Hopefully this time I will add this comment as opposed to removing it...

That's a great concept, "Falling". I think everyone's had that nightmare as kids, etc., but this shot doesn't really convey it well at all. It looks like a shot of tree branches from a horizontal perspective (instead of vertical).

Droping through the trees to the ground...wow! I can feel it! the colors add a dark ominous sense. good job 8

Good idea and well executed. I've heard that falling is a common dream. Don't think I've had that one though...THANK GOD!!!

I had to come back to this one a couple of times. It does give the feeling of falling out of the tree very well, can't wait to see how you did this. Very good capture of the challenge and the colors are great, lighting is just spottled enough to keep your eyes going everywhere. Well done.

Not your average photo.

In my wildest dreams, I cannot imagine a more succesful rendition of the sensation of falling. The effects of viewing this remarkable shot are almost physical!

Since my stock measuring tools (for evaluating images) have been rendered absolutely ineffective if not ridiculed by the manner of this shot, I am voting with heart: > 10 minus 1 (for what I consider a redundant coloured border) > 9

Wow. No idea how you did this, but the effect is excellent. It actually leaps out of the screen at me as if in 3D.

Makes me dizzy. At first glance I didn't think I liked this photo but as I look at it longer I realize its fantastic. It certainly has the desired effect on me. The grass looks fairly soft but I still hope I wake up before I hit!! I hope you will explain how you did this. 10

Wow! That is a great effect, do to the motion on all sides, I actually feel my eyes pulled toward the center as though I am trully falling. Nice work, why would this need to be validated?

I don't care for the yellow and black border with this shot, the black alone would have been better...JMO
