Challenge: Free Study XIV (Advanced Editing IV)
Camera: Canon EOS-300D Rebel
Lens: Sigma 18-125mm f/3.5-5.6 DC for Canon
Location: Columbus Zoo - Where else?
Date: Oct 2, 2006
Galleries: Portraiture, Animals
Date Uploaded: Oct 2, 2006

Yet again - another tiger from the Columbus Zoo. I wonder how many people will know this to be mine as this is the 5th or so that I have entered. These tigers are amazing posers and very interactive with the people watching them. Not a whole lot to say about this. It may not have the excitement of a wild pose or the heavy editing of my previous FS tiger entry, but I felt that this was way too clean to not enter. I felt the image was sharp, the colors dead on, and the composition pleasing. Maybe not a wow shot but I hope it will do well. Next FS I should have my Sigma 70-300mm lens so I hope to get even closer and better shots of these beauties.

PP - crop, levels, saturation, minor cloning, dodging and burning all over the place, light blur to background, USM a couple of times, High pass and soft light blend, NI, resize for web, USM again, border.

A couple of outakes from this "portrait session".

I was just looking at your profile and noticed your comments received needed another one to make 4700. That's all.

Oh, and I love tiger photos.

My take on this: possibly a little too much saturation, possibly a little too much yellow. Moving rapidly on, placement of the DOF is masterful. A little portion of the ground in front of kitty is sharp as is the face, superbly so, so that the fact that the rest of the body is going out of focus really focusses(!) attention on the head and shoulders. Great composition and use of ROT. I'm sure that this took an awful lot of patience to get, just waiting for the moment. Extremely well done indeed.

I agree: Tigers make the most dramatic photos! It sure got me one of my best scores too :) This one is awesome! You have certainly gotten it down how to bring out the best in these gorgeous animals! Great job!

Awesome focus...should be in the top 10...I'm going with a 9 because I think it's probably a caged animal.

Beautiful colors on the tiger, though perhaps a touch too saturated for my tastes. Great detail and you managed to capture a great expression on the tiger.

This would be perfect if you cropped just the face, but quite nice anyway. Van

Great composition and lighting. The colourful tiger looks great against the plainer background. Nice DOF and the gaze from the tiger is fantastic.
