Processing.. hm. Started with a photo of my hand. Gradient map was applied and I adjusted the levels to give more depth to the blacks. Cloned out a small scrape on my thumb.

Then I created a new image where I painted some stuff with a few brushes using colors I selected from the other shot. I used Neat Image to give contrast by sharpening. Then I selected the entirety of the other shot and with shift-click dragged it onto a new layer in the new (background) image.

Then I added an inner shadow, drop shadow, and stroke (black/white gradient) to the new layer to create the smaller border around the photo.
