 Autumn Color Change

When leaves appear green, it is because they contain an abundance of chlorophyll. Chlorophyll masks other pigment colors. Anthocyanins, in turn, mask carotenoids. As summer turns to autumn, decreasing light levels cause chlorophyll production to slow. However, the decomposition rate of chlorophyll remains constant, so the green color will fade from the leaves. At the same time, anthocyanin production in leaves increases, in response to surging sugar concentrations. Leaves containing primarily anthocyanins will appear red. Leaves with good amounts of both anthocyanins and carotenoids will appear orange. Leaves with carotenoids but little or no anthocyanins will appear yellow.

Critique Club Review:

Focus is nice and sharp, depth of field was used well to isolate the subject from the background clutter.

Color saturation and hue are done quite well. Lighting, brightness and contrast are done very well also.

Unfortunately I thinky your score suffered from the votes of those who take the challenge litterally. (I don't see no stinking test tubes....)

This is a nice picture. Some evidently didn't grasp the chemistry that goes on in nature. Not enough drama for a top finish here, but certainly not worth over 100 votes less than a 5.

Nice fall shot and I would say there is more Anthocyanins in them leaves then Anthocyanins and Carotenoids but still I fully see the effects. Nice sharp shot and good DOF (out of focus) background.

To many big words! Nice colors and good sharp image. I love aspen leaves and am looking forward to going up to the mountains and seeing the colors in the coming weeks.
