Not another close-up of a dragonfly face! Sorry, but I couldn't help it; when I shoot macro, it's usually insects or arachnids, and dragonflies are one of my favorite subjects. I like seeing the differences in dragonfly colorations, and I always take advantage of any instance where the insect isn't too easily scared away. The reason I could get this close is because this dragonfly had just emerged and its wings were not fully dried. Adjusting the levels for more contrast made the image more noisy or grainy, since it was a bit underexposed. I've been doing macro insect photography for more than fifteen years and still feel that I have a lot of improving to do. This image isn't as good as what I'm capable of, but I've run out of time, so here it is!

Great detail. The reflections in the middle of the left eye and the upper right of the right eye are a bit distracting. Good color and composition.

You don't get much closer than that! Excellent detail with nice depth of field. I think this is the closest I've seen a dragonfly head. Good one.
09/27/2003 09:54:55 AM
Wow. Good job. Excellent colours and lighting. I don't even mind that grass there. I think it adds context.

For heaven's sakes! I have got to get a digital slr and lenses just so I can take macros like these. It's not all just in the equipment though (but it helps!), as you have a VERY well taken shot here, much harder than it looks I suspect. Bit too much glare and noise for me to give above 8. Shame the background isn't more black. Did you try NeatImage? 8

09/23/2003 03:57:24 AM

09/22/2003 09:54:45 PM

There are a few glares on his eyes that are a little distracting, otherwise nice close-up.

Incredible detail in the bugs eyes. The reflections off of the eye really makes them very interesting. Love the honeycomb shapes in the eye. Beautiful colors.
09/22/2003 01:03:03 AM
This has got to be one of the neatest pictures I've ever seen!!!! I'm assuming it's a bug of sorts??? GREAT macro of whatever it is!!! :) 10
