Challenge: Image without Subject (Advanced Editing IV)

Location: Hocking Hills

Aperture: 4.0

This was snapped during a family outing to Hocking Hills State Park here in Ohio. This cave was huge (as evident by the scale of the three tiny people on top). I wanted to bring them out more in editing but was afraid someone would think they were a subject.

My husband - Timfythetoo - and I both took shots at Hocking Hills so now the race is on to see who scores better (as if I didn't already know - ME hee hee hee!) :)

I am not really sure what a subjectless photo is...is there such a thing? Every photo has a subject or subjects right? Oh well. I liked my pic (except for the top of the cave in the upper left corner - had to have it though - it blocked out some of the sun) and decided to post it because I do not recognize any particular single subject that dominates the photo.

Levels, saturation, brightness/contrast, burning, dodging, sharpen, border, save for web, and neat image.

*Critique Club*
Aimee! Your pic was given to me to critique for the Critique Club.
As I always state, I'm in no way a pro at this. I just like pictures. I must say I'm honored to be able to critique one of your pics. I'm developping a sequence to my critiquing, so here goes...
What your pic made me feel: I feel a sense of awe. Wow...how small we are. I can hear the stream, feel the wind. The echo of the rock hitting the bottom of the cave...That guy up there threw it.
What I like about your submission: I like the composition. I think it fits the challenge real well. Nothing in there is overpowering. It's well balanced. I like what you achieved with the lighting. Nice soft natural light with Sun rays peeking through. The Sun leaves brightness and shadows though! I kinda like the cave ceilling in the top left. I find it frames your cave.
What I like a bit less: The patch of sunlight on the ground and in the stream. It gets that part overexposed...But... I know there's not much you can do about that! Same thing for the sky, but to a lesser degree.
I'm trying to figure this out myself. I almost always end up with a blown out or cyan sky! I'm really wondering how this would've come out in HDR. Would be interesting.
I think the comments you got were spot on. To quote xXxscarletxXx: "Absolutely beautiful" Good job!!!

John

wow..this one needs to be blown up big...then you can really make the dimensions work as we would see the people...very cool shot..

Taking a second peek at a handful of images from the challenge... I didn't notice the people at the top! Without reading your comments I probably wouldn't have seem them - you're right, the cave IS huge. ;^)

Pretty decent score and finish - congrats!

Neat looking place. Tough environment for getting a properly exposed image. I like the sun rays that you've captured. Minor bummer about the hot spots in the foreground. The green foliage in the middleground is quite vibrant. Best of luck to you in the challenge.

First image I comment on this time. Just like the real scene, I see more details the longer I look. My choice for the winner right now.

What a lush and beautiful place, I'd love to see this in person some day. Very nice job handling what must of been some very tricky lighting.

Pleasant on the eye, though I find the dark areas a bit distracting.
