Challenge: Image without Subject (Advanced Editing IV)
Camera: Sony DSC-F717
Location: Studio
Date: Aug 23, 2006
Aperture: f4.0
ISO: 400
Shutter: 1/160
Galleries: Abstract
Date Uploaded: Aug 24, 2006

The yellow square in the middle is the photo; a digital photo of an orange box lid.

Post processing: smart blur, hue/sat to yellow, pushed color balance to intensify yellow, crop to 20 pixels; added multiple borders of black (10 pixels) and matching yellow (20 pixels) to create the optical illusion effect of an image without a subject. While I expect to score in the low 3's, I don't enter DPC challenges to score high, but more to explore new approaches to creativity through the medium of digital photography.
Disqualification Details
Cloning, dodging, burning, etc. to improve your photo or remove imperfections or minor distracting elements, etc. is acceptable. However, *using any editing tools to duplicate, create, or move major elements* of your photograph is not permitted.

"to explore new approaches to creativity through the medium of digital photography"

Definitely happened here. Congrats on having interesting ways of thinking about things!

Given your explanation of the process used to created the photo, I would entirely agree with the DQ based on the major element clause. Of what is this is a photograph? Nobody would regard the 20x20 pixel yellow square as the major element. Most people describing the photo would not even mention the yellow square in the middle, but would describe it as a series of black and yellow boxes creating an illusion of depth or an Escher-like optical effect. You have effectively created a major element by your use of repetitive borders.

DQ'd of course, but for reasons which have little to do with what actually happened in this "photo". As the editing rules read "using any editing tools to duplicate, create, or move major elements of your photograph is not permitted". Certainly. I agree. I did not use editing tools to duplicate, create, or move major elements of this photo. I simply resized the photo to 20x20 pixels and added multiple borders. I appreciate Kirbic's attempt at explaining the DQ but after reading and reading the editing rules, still disagree with the site council on this one.

All in all, the "photo" of a yellow square 20x20 pixels is very uninteresting, and the overall entry a tad obnoxious to view as well as to review.

Way to go Site Council! Keep up the good work on behalf of all of us here in DPCland.

I am probably wrong...but this doens't even look like a picture. I looks like some braint teaser or somthing. If it is a picture (I am sure it is) the quality is excellent

I am not sure this is legal...if it's a shot of a picture or screen it breaks the rules...

Hahaha! Is this many borders on a tiny central square? I can't wait to see how they deal with this :-) Brava!

I will comment now as I dont see this making it too far into voting. Figure this will get dqed pretty quick as I dont believe it is a phtoto. But if it is it isnt a very appealing one. Just feels like computer animated lines.
