Critique Club Review:

I'm no prude, and nudity does not offend me. I'm just not sure what the nudity is saying here. To really work, the entire piece has to stay on message. I like the juxtaposition of the sharply defined hand, with the soft focus of the rest of the picture. The soft focus looks almost as if it were sharpened after it was taken, as it does appear to be a bit grainy. I like your idea of going against tradition, usually soft focus images are dreamy, romantic, fairy tale, type efforts. Yours is the opposite, which is a good start. Each element just needs a reason, and to reinforce the message of the others. Good lighting, and contrast. The colors are almost like a sepia photo, which works well here.

Looks more noisy than soft and the composition is mediocre at best.

I want to say that I see a ribbon in your future, but I wonder how the nudity police are voting...

Unless the point is to show the beauty of human curves, nudity has very little place in art. This seems little more than sex appeal.

I am not fond of this type of photography (personal preference) but will try my best to make a constructive comment. For me this is too OOF/Blurry rather than soft focus, I do like the composition and post processing is nice (MHO)

Great! Finally a real soft focus. Why this challenge is so misunderstand.

I think I'm missing something.. I do not understand why a nude woman would be pretending to shoot a gun at someone. Unless she's upset because her photo got taken without her permission?
08/23/2006 01:37:42 PM
Strikes me as being a DOF photo rather than a soft focus

Excellent! I just love this picture. The rule of thirds and the focus only on the hand works like a charm. Every time I look at the picture I can imagine a different story behind it. The fact that you do not realy see the expression on the face, makes you wonder if she is smiling or not. It just gives you a feeling of intimacy, like a game between two lovers. Added to favourites

I'm all for nudes but this one doesn't work for me. The soft focus that could make this form really glow comes across more like noise on the background. I think having the model centered would also have made more of an impact even if it meant moving her 'pistol' hand over to the center of her body. Sorry, I think I know the photog here and I'm a pretty big fan of your stuff but this one just doesn't have the mojo. Very drab overall. Might have played up the drab with a more emotive sort of pose. What if she held the hand gun to her head? Seriously, that would have filled the void to the left of her head and really worked with the feeling of depression that the soft focus and colors are creating. Anyway, nice shot (no pun ;) ).
