I tried to do something a little different here, i.e. soft focus, DOF, lighting, etc., but it seems most just want to see fine detail in these shots. Oh well.

Btw, the face is in focus. I think some just got confused by the soft focus and thought it was OOF.

I think this image shoulda done a lot better. I can't believe it, I like this one as much as the top 10 dragonfly shot.

Thanks guys for all the comments. I think this photo was misunderstood but I should have known trying to do something different with a shot like this was asking for trouble. While I really appreciate the time Konador and C Novack spent with their comments theirs highlighted that misunderstanding of this photo, which is totally my fault. Maybe next time I'll try and capture the critter and put a hat on him and some wardrobe next time to seal the deal. :P

Hey there. Didn't have time to comment on anything midrange during voting, but I gave this a 6. Would've been an 9 or 10 if the sharpest focus had been on the bug instead of the stem. But man, what I wouldn't give to get macros like this even with that!

Great colors. He looks like he's smiling at you. :)
More dof might be nice, but is not really necessary imo.

Wow. That's a thin slice on DOF! IMO, too thin. You missed the eye of the dragonfly and that's critical. Otherwise, very nice bg for this subject and interesting color/contrast. If only...

Very nice critter here. Just the dof bothers me with his long tail being blurred drawing me off the page.

Love some of the details shown here in this photo of a dragonfly - from the wings to the 'hairs' on the legs and even the small 'thorns' on the stem it rests on. The greens that are dominent in the background and the stem is the perfect backdrop for this subject - especially since it is just a solid color with not much detail to distract the eye away from the main subject, the dragonfly. The only plaints are that while some parts of the body are in sharp focus others are not. I know, it is very difficult to get a really exceptional shot but you might want (if you did not already do that here) to try a smaller aperature setting (along with a ASA of 200 or lower) to get a greater Depth Of Field and get the dragonfly as a whole in sharp detail. What makes those settings difficult is that 1) a living object has the darnest ability to move when you have set up the perfect shot 2)when the wind blows it moves your subject and causes it to blur 3)keeping a steady hand for a macro may not always work. But IF you manage to catch it in all the wonderful details it is worth it.

Nice close up although the overall green tones are somewhat odd.

I really like this. The detail in the eyes and the legs as they touch the stalk of the plant is very clear. Good DOF too. Well done (10) and added as a fav

Composition: 8 - Good choice of composition, it shows the subject off in a good way, and the stick on the right stops it looking too centered.
Technical: 6 - Nicely exposed with good detail on the wing. The green fits well too. It seems like you may have used neatimage too much though, as a lot of the detail seems "smudged" out.
Creativity: 6 - The nice vibrant greens set this apart from other similar macros.
Appeal: 7 - The colour and contrast makes this an interesting shot to look at :)

Overall Calculated Average Score: 6
