LOVE this shot. Love the way you framed it, that you left the mill center and gave the sky and stones equal emphasis. I know you have nothing to do with the way the ground is sloped, but I like the lines that lead upward to the mill as well. Well done and well deserved. Shame about the DQ, hope to see more from you.

Shame about the ribbon, but one for my favs.

Shame about the Dq..still a very fab pic.

Fantastic entry!! I didn't vote on this but it certainly would have gotten a 10 from me.
08/17/2006 08:54:59 PM
Congrats on the blue! I was just a little surprised at your camera settings - was this really at f2.8 or was the decimal point in the wrong place? I just don't see how you could get sharpness from front to back with that f-stop.
08/17/2006 05:35:28 PM
Congrats on your blue ribbon in your first entry. Very good shot!
08/17/2006 02:37:31 PM
Gorgeous shot... Congratulations on your debut entry & blue ribbon! WOW... I look forward to seeing more of your work.

Congratulations. You are my hero for winning a blue on your first entry. It is a beautiful picture and well deserving of the blue. I aspire to producing images like this. Well done.

Congratulations on your blue ribbon, and this is your 1st Challenge entry! I have fond memories of Bruge.
08/16/2006 11:22:43 PM
Great shot Paul! I love it when something other than the typical 4 models of Canon and Nikon wins. It shows that after at some point, its NOT THE CAMERA! Again, great work.
08/16/2006 08:05:21 PM
Congrats Paul on your first and Blue Ribbon to boot!

You have found the recipe to wowing the voters here and presented us with a fine photograph. Don't let negative comments get you down. It happens once in a while after the fact. You passed the voters approval, ended up with a Blue ribbon - just be proud of it.
What if you did this in black & white? Would you be guilty of emulating Ansel Adams? So what if you did? Many of us will die trying to learn a successful way of presenting a fine image.

Well.. .I have to chime in and say that I totally disagree with Imagineeer and Kemptonreporter. I think this photo is exactly why good photographers need to not be so anal and rigid about any "rule" (and the rule of thirds one is so incredibly over-emphasized here). . .and realize that a great photo can take all sorts of compositions. It's the eye of the great ones that "sees it" and throws the "rules" out the window. This photo is incredible, and the perspective of that upward winding cobblestone road against that dramatic sky with these beautiful blue tones. I think if ever there was a deserving blue ribbon this is it! And way to go, waiting till you got "the one", entering it and winning blue on your first call! You rock, and this is totally awesome!

congratz, great achievement !

I think you're actually very lucky to be blue, as I'm sure you realise too. This is a relatively average, over exposed shot made 'better' by some fairly clumsy processing. Sorry, but this is the kind of editing becoming prevalent here at DPC and it's not a good thing.

The centred composition doesn't do it for me, although the foreground has interest and you have a strong viewpoint too. The subject is OK, but your horizon line slices dead centre too which kills much of what drama may have been available. I would have included much more cobblestones and less of that undramatic, overcast sky, creating some stronger leading lines.

first entry a blue...how can that be??? congratulations and well done

I like the mill, but I'm not sure about the blue tint
08/14/2006 07:44:22 PM
I wonder what moving a step or two would do for this to move the mill away from the center of the image.
08/14/2006 06:51:02 PM
I really like the composition, beautiful light and great textures! 8

The mill looks awesome against the sky. I might have cropped a bit of the foreground.

Interesting. Looks like something from a fantasyland. Like the lighting on the windmill, and the dramatic clouds are great. The cobblestones and curved path are excellent as well.

Very well balanced photo.

I didn't know a stone path and a mill could be so beautiful, consider me educated.
