Challenge: Black and White in Color (Advanced Editing IV*)
Collection: Challenge Entries (most)
Camera: Canon PowerShot A620

I was trying to get a variation on the theme that's done so well here at DPC. I thought and thought about how I could get something besides the straight vertical segments.

Finally, I hit on the idea of taping paper to the back of the glass. I don't think this would work nearly as well in color. As it was, I had a lot of trouble getting a white mask to work, and finally punted and just used a black one.

Then I worried that people would see it wasn't the normal refraction and assume it was just an empty glass. Hence the "broken" forks.

I'm really happy with the final image overall.

I left myself no time, so editing was extremely simple: crop, resize, save.

I'd like to thank hughletheren, who wrote a fantastic how'd they do that," Rikki, and various others who've done similar shots. By reading their descriptions, I learned a lot that made it much easier.

Post-voting:
Thanks to the voters! I allllmost got my second 6 out of this one! The commenters help me see why I didn't, but I'm quite pleased with the score anyway.

The funny thing is no one noticed what, to me, was a glaring error: I didn't clone out the horizontal line marking the mask that's visible all the way across the left black section.
I didn't leave myself time to edit it, but fortunately it was in sharp focus.

And then there are a couple of small blemishes - primarily the smudge in the lower right and the reflection in the upper right. And, as a commenter noted, the hazy line blurring the black/white boundary.

Maybe I'll redo this one when "Take 2 II" comes around!

Meanwhile, here's how I edited it using comments and stuff I learned since I entered it:

Greetings from the Critique Club.

Hi Jeffery,

Congratulations on your progress in the last few challenges. Your four most recent shots occupy four out of your five highest scores. What I really like is how you are obviously experimenting; looking at what has worked for others and applying it. keep pushing your personal boundaries. It was a brave choice to submit such a 'done' theme and I'm sure some voters took you down a little for that.

You have already noted in the Photographer's Comments section all that is wrong with the shot. I'm pretty sure that if you were to redo it right away and resubmit to the same challenge you would manage to clear 6 by a fair bit. Accepting that you have already learnt loads from the experience of producing this shot I won't comment further.

I hope my comments help and Good Luck in future Challenges!

Cheers
Paul

I don't think anyone else has mentioned it, but I believe this image may have been let down somewhat by the contrast inside the glass itself. It appears as though the whites are bleeding into the blacks, making it look a little murky. It is still a tremendous effort on your part and I seriously doubt I could have done it better. Cheers.

Neat one.

I think that the white may be a bit over exposed since I can see a bit of purple haloing around the white edges.

An often seen idea works well again here...

Another one that looks a bit better in the thumbnail. It's just not very cleanly done. I know it's not the easiest thing in the world to do, too, but it could have been made a little better with spot editing. Just things like the split between the two backgrounds, and the blue halo around the white side of the glass.

Overall, I give this a 6. Good effort. :)

Photos of this nature have been done before. However, this photo meets the challenge appropriately. The focus is good. It deserves an above average score.

I like this shot, but the forks are "broken" and the white doesn't carry through the liquid on the right hand side.

Nice, but I don't get the forks thing. An olive, maybe; but forks?

But the refractive swap-over of the black & white through the glass (especially the stem) works well, so I'll add a couple of points for that.
