The entrance to the Scottish Rites Cathedral. My late father was a Mason and would come here. From time to time we would meet for dinner before he went to the Cathedral to do his Mason thing. I never took to it.

I did some black and whites with the Fuji last year and since I pass it on one of my walking routes home from work at night I have been visiting it more and more. I thought I had entered a shot of this entrance in a prior challenge but found that what I had entered was a detail of some of the front columns shown in this. I thought of it instantly for this challenge based on the curious/interesting angle I used to get as much of the entrance in at close range.

I shot for this challenge 4 times in the past week, twice with the Fuji S7000 and twice with the Nikon and the kit lens. I am finding it more difficult to compose with the narrower frame of the Nikon but I cannot compare the quality of the resulting images....the Nikon is just better so I ended up going with one of the images from the second Nikon shoot.

The lighting of the entrance makes the image for me and as good as it is in BW I decided to go with color. I used cloudy for the white balance on both cameras to get the golden hues. The angle came about due to not using a tripod. The nearness came from standing at the iron fence that surrounds the entrance when the building is closed. It enables me to get a steady shot by placing my elbows on the top bar of the fence, in between the pickets, and then composing from there.

I am not sure how this will do. I think it shows perspective well while trying to show as much of the intricacy of the carvings on the entrance. Hope you do, too.

Thanks, Jen! Thanks for the comments during the challenge.

A note about the angle. Straight is not going to play with this shooting venue. Love too, but the entrance is surrounded by a black, iron picket fence. The opening is ungated during the day but not at night and the columns are still behind the fence regardless of the time of day. I wanted to show, using this angle, as much of the intricacy of this subject as I could without having the fence in the image....just about did it...there is a bit by the lower left corner.

Wonderful detail, and very interesting lighting. The angle makes me a bit dizzy but I don't dislike it. I would love to maybe see some of these shots that were more strait on. Just my opinion, not to degrade from this excellent photo. 9

I think you cropped this too tight, and the angle's too high. It comes across as an abstract, so the sense of receding into the distance gets lost.

Nice detail and the color works well, but the angle is a bit disorienting, at least for me.
