This image was taken at a local glass shop during the final stages of the process. Hand held at 1/40 of a second I was able to capture the glass blower spinning the plate as it was coming out of the kiln. Moments later the front of the kiln was a blaze of fire as the oxides from the chemicals on the glass hit the air.

Thanks to everyone for the great comments and even better votes. I'm puzzled at the 1's and 2's but that's what makes this site great.

As the two other people that had similar images as mine can attest, one of the biggest problems with this type of shot is you have to work with the available light or else you run the risk of loosing the perspective completely. I was standing over 15 feet from the front of the kiln and was sweating profusely. Depth of field was not even a second thought since this was shot at 1/40, f 3.2 and I did not have a tripod. The other issue someone questioned was the angle of perspective. I spent over 2 hours and over 50 images for this one shot to come up. The glass blower kept moving from side to side and in his words 'I can't afford to stop moving the glass since it's in a constant state of flux, and I can't take the time to allow you to setup a photo without causing damage to the piece on the rod.' Terry Bloodworth is a world class glass blower and it was a privilage to be able to work in his company.

The motion really makes this image. Nice job with the exposure as well keeping the details outside of the fire and still not blowing out the fire. (No pun inteded)

Pretty cool shot, love the motion blur effect on it, without it this shot would be pretty static and boring.

There are a few glass-furnace shots in this challenge. Which is fine; they offer the chance to capture some powerful colours and contrasts, it's smart to go and find them for a challenge like this.

My initial reaction to this was to suggest a broader aspect ratio, with some more elements introduced to the right to lead us to the furnace. But the more I look at it, the more I think you've got it right as it is. My eye is taken from the top of the composition to the bottom, courtesy of the slightly ajar furnace door. I like it.

That isn't Hell! It's a glass blower's oven, and it's a cool shot.

I like the circle, colors & square crop a lot! Too bad the hand at the right is out of focus due to DoF, but for the rest this is a beautiful image :)

Good idea and execution. I think it might be more interesting if it could possibly have been taken from a little more angle.

Very nice, but I have seen 2 shots of this same angle from other people. I wonder if there is another way of capturing this shot from a different, more original perspective. But eather way, I really like the shot. Nice work.
