A good entry for this challenge..... Exhibits a interesting capture of a physical attribute of the bird in flight. Motion in the water and on the bird portray a natural optical effect that develops a enjoyable rendering for this subject. I voted 7 for plenty of canvas space & subtle overall contrast in the water w/ beautiful shadow/reflection under the soft but appropriately defined dark bird.

5.0? I'm a bit surprised here. Two things, IMO: One, the motion pan was pretty good, but not excellent. We see blur in the head and we wish it was sharper leaving the motion to the waves (from the pan) and the wings (from the longer exposure). Two, perhaps a smidge more contrast, but I'd have to see that one to see if it's better. This is a low contrast shot, but it may actually work. The pictures, based on the title, is looking for a very fluid feel and the low contrast may have been to your advantage. The composition is excellent. Ultimately I think it was the blur of the head that got you.

Well now, Laurie, I have to apologize for my too hasty comment below. The forum thread about the results of this challenge brought me back for a second look. I apologize for my comment suggesting higher contrast when you actually intended for the contrast to be low.

Looking at the image a second time, it's easy for me to understand why you reduced the contrast. The low contrast contributes to the feeling of the bird being one with the water, and the water one with the bird. So I take back the contrast remark :-) Instead I suggest (and maybe just to protect my own dignity, heehee) that a black frame might have kept my eye in this subtle scene a bit longer, instead of just giving you a 5 and moving on. I stand by the positive parts of my comment below, though! Also, I really like the movement in the wing. Nice work and sorry for my looking too quickly during voting.

the blur does convey motion and also suggests an ink wash with a brush. 7

Good texture in the water, would like to see the bird's beak in focus.

Good use of the motion of the wings.

I bet this was touch to catch. I'd love to see the subject filling more of the frame.

Great capture, especially with the legs stretched out as they are. I'd like to see more contrast, though. For me, this is a little too flat, but I think with some post-processing to darken the blacks and lighten the whites, this would've done much better because it is such a great capture. I really like the simplicity of the scene, with just the bird, the water, and the bird's shadow.

The subject needs to be in better focus with the background blurred more.
