Taken just south of my hometown.

This is an old gold mine site. What we see are the residues. Now, the mines can't do that, they have to clean everything when they are done with the mine.

The colors are as close as they really appears when your are there. There's lots of iron in the sands and the color comes from the rust.

Crop, levels, usm, saved for web.

Very appropriate for the challenge. Might be nice to have an object - driftwood? - as a focal point.

Nice texture, but it'd help to have a specific subject to draw the eye.

I like the photo - the colours and patterns are great. But it's a bit too minimalist. A dark object with a bold, simple shape (like deadwood, or charred bone, etc.) would really have given the image some impact.

This is an eye-catching image. The rust red of the iron oxides on the dessicated lake? bed stand out. The two twigs are rather an oddity. If you had a couple of fish skeletons (not too white) or some such more subtle prop, the photo would have worked a little better to captivate the viewer's attention. An ant walking across this land of canyons would have done the job too.

I think that's a picture of the background. You need a subject on it. A dead animal would be perfect.
